W. Bowling Earns Second Place at Capital City Classic

DOVER, Del. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's bowling team captured second place at the 2013 Delaware State Capital City Classic on Sunday, Feb. 10.  The Knights went 1-2 on the day and finished with a record of 9-4 this weekend.

As the second ranked team, the Knights took on top-ranked University of Maryland Eastern Shore in the first best-of-seven Baker match of the day.  After taking a 2-0 lead with games of 236-223 and 279-188, the Knights dropped game three, 249-195.  The Hawks went on to take the next three games, 223-219, 227-203 and 265-170 to earn a 4-3 victory.

With the victory, the Hawks earned a bye to the championship match.

The Knights took on New Jersey City University in the second Baker match of the playoff series.  The Gothic Knights took the win in the first two games, 195-170 and 200-157, before the Knights locked in for the remaining games.

With scores of 220-179, 222-203, 235-166 and 215-180 the Knights won the next four consecutive games and defeated NJCU, 4-2.

The win over NJCU earned the Knights a trip to the tournament championship game and a rematch with UMES.

The Hawks earned wins in the first two games with scores of 203-201 and 201-189.  The Knights responded with wins in games three and four, 232-195 and 189-166 to even the score at 2-2.

The Hawks went on to defeat FDU 227-22 in game five to take the lead and won game five 237-187 to seal the Baker win and the tournament crown.

“It's hard to say that we're pleased with our teams performance after losing a championship match,” said Head Coach Mike LoPresti.  “But this weekend was positive because we continued to improve.  We are now to the point where we can compete at a high level but still a little short at competing at the level of the elite teams.”

“Luckily, there is still plenty of time to make that happen,” LoPresti added.

The Knights shined in the traditional games on Saturday and saw four players record averages over 205.

Senior Danielle McEwan (Stony Point, NY/Stony Point) was named tournament MVP after compiling a total pinfall of 1,203 through five games.  The high-scoring day accounted for a 240.6 average.

Michelle Hunzaker (Cary, NC/Green Hope High School) was also named to the all-tournament team with a total pinfall of 1,125 and a second-best average of 225.

Liat Vizenfeld (Holon, Israel/Campus Kiryat Sharet) and Rebecca Fischer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Northgate High School) also placed in the top 13 among individuals with averages of 214.8 and 206, respectively.

The Knights will next compete in the James Brown Invitational hosted by Morgan State University Feb. 15-17 at AMF Towson in Towson, Md.
