Box Score

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team lost to No. 23/22 Iowa, 92-59, Monday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in a nationally-televised contest on the Big Ten Network. With the victory, the Hawkeyes improve to 10-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 3-9 overall.

Senior Mathias Seilund (Dragoer, Denmark/Falkonergaardens Gymnasium) came off the bench to score a career-high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from distance, grabbed a team-high five rebounds and recorded three blocks and two steals on the defensive end. Senior Sidney Sanders Jr. (Charleston, S.C./Burke) added 16 points.

"From Arizona to Iowa and in between, our team has played some great teams, and tonight was obviously no exception," Head Coach Greg Herenda said. "Iowa is tremendously long, skilled and very-well coached."

FDU started quickly, scoring the first six points of the game, before Iowa started to use its large side advantage en route to scoring the next 19 points to take a 19-6 lead with 11:04 remaining before halftime.

The Hawkeyes would extend their lead to as many as 22 points in the first half before going into the locker room up 47-26.

Over the final 20 minutes, the Knights were only outscored, 45-33, as Iowa finished the game shooting 48.6 percent (34-of-70) while holding FDU to only 32.3 percent (21-of-65).

With its size, the home team held a commanding 54-32 advantage on the glass, including 19-10 on the offensive end, which led to a 24-5 difference in second-chance points. Iowa also scored 54 points in the paint, compared to the Knights' 26.

"Our guys were a step slow to everything tonight, but we continued to battle," Herenda said. "Mathias (Seilund) broke out and had an excellent game. I am happy for him."

Five players scored in double-figures for the Hawkeyes, with Gabriel Olaseni leading the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Melsahn Basabe added a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Peter Jok netted 11 points. Jarrod Uthoff (10 points, 10 rebounds) and Zach McCabe (10 points) rounded out the scoring for Iowa.

"Now we need to do well in exams and finally get some rest. The basketball marathon took us just under 6,000 miles, and I know that this journey will help us in conference play."

FDU will now have a 12-day break before returning to the hardwood on Saturday, Dec. 21 when it travels to Manhattan to face Columbia for a 4 p.m. tipoff.

MORE HERENDA QUOTES: "They're really good obviously. We played Arizona. Iowa is probably in that class. They're a very good basketball team.  They're going to win a lot of games, and they're going to win a lot of games here. They are so deep, and they're very long. Iowa is so well coached. Preparing for them, we could not find a weakness. Then tonight, we couldn't find a weakness. They were very solid at rebounding, that extra pass, they do a lot of good things. Fran is obviously a really good coach. I have a lot of respect for Fran and the Iowa basketball program. They out classed us tonight, but our kids fought hard until the very end. We just played four road games in eight days. We beat two majors, but we didn't have too much left in the tank."

"All of these experiences just make us better—playing in these environments, playing teams with size and skill, and teams that are coached so well. Our league is very underrated, but when we get to our league we'll be able to see the basket, get a rebound, and do some of the things you take for granted. When you play up a few conferences, it's difficult. These games are very important to us. This Iowa game is going to help us beat somebody in our league, so I think it's very beneficial to play quality teams."
