W. Volleyball Holds On for 3-2 Victory Over Bryant

HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team was victorious Saturday after hanging on for a 3-2 victory over Bryant in Northeast Conference action at Stratis Arena. With the victory, the Knights have won three of their last four matches and improve to 4-22 (2-9 NEC) on the season, while the Bulldogs fall to 8-22 (3-8 NEC) overall.

FDU won the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-22, but saw Bryant rally to tie match at two with 25-15 and 25-22 advantages in sets three and four. The Knights then were able to claim the match with a 15-10 win in the fifth and final set.

With the scored tied at 10-10 in the opening set, FDU scored four of the next five points to take a 14-11 lead, before the Bulldogs countered with the same mini run to retie the set, 15-15. The Knights then took control by scoring the next three points to take the lead for good while ending the set on a 10-4 spurt.

FDU found itself down 10-6 in the second set but was able to claw its way back to force a 12-12 tie. After going back down four at 16-12, the Knights scored the next eight points to take their first lead of the set en route to a 20-16 advantage. FDU eventually stretched its lead out to five before settling for the three-point victory.

The third set was very competitive over the first half of action, before Bryant broke open a 13-13 tie by scoring the next four points and ending the set on a 12-2 run.

The Knights led the fourth set 9-7 before relinquishing the lead. After falling behind 15-12, FDU fought back to tie the set at 19-19. And with the match still tied at 22-22, the Bulldogs scored the final three points to force a deciding fifth set.

Bryant led the final set early, 6-4, before FDU came back to take a 7-6 lead. And with the score tied at 8-8, a kill from reigning NEC Rookie of the Week Alyssa Mcivor gave the Knights the lead for good, as they pulled away for the victory.

McIvor led FDU with 14 kills and 18 digs to record a double-double. Sophomore Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) also had a double-double with 41 assists and 14 digs. Graduate student Violeta Slabakova (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) and freshman Courtney Kovensky (Highland, Calif./Citrus Valley) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while junior Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) and sophomore Corey Lostetter (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) recorded 14 and 12 digs on defense. Slabakova and junior Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) constructed six block-assists at the net.

The Knights will conclude the home portion of their schedule Sunday against Central Connecticut State. A senior day ceremony will take place before the 3 p.m., as Slabakova and Taylor Roland-Buohl (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) will be honored.
