NEWARK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team was victorious on Sunday after going on the road to defeat in-state rival NJIT, 3-1, at the Fleisher Center. With the victory, the Knights improve to 3-22 on the season, while the Highlanders fall to 7-12 overall. FDU won by scores of 25-14, 14-25, 25-22, 25-23.
In the opening set the Knights found themselves down 5-1 earlier on but rallied to score the next five points to take a one-point lead. Eventually, FDU went on an 11-2 run to take a 12-7 advantage.
NJIT came back to score five of the next six points to cut the deficit to one, but it was all Knights after that, as they scored the next nine points and finished the game on a 12-2 flurry to clinch the first game.
FDU scored the first point of the second set, but it was all NJIT after that. The Highlanders scored the next five points and were never threatened after the Knights trailed 7-5, which was the closest they would come, as NJIT tied the match on an 18-9 spurt.
In the third set the Highlanders jumped out to a 10-2 lead, but FDU fought back and scored four straight points and eight of the next 11 to cut the deficit to 13-10.
After NJIT went ahead 15-10, the Knights scored another four points in a row and five of six to cut the lead to one at 16-15, before the Highlanders rebounded to go back up five at 22-17.
With its back to the wall, FDU closed out the set strong and scored the final eight points to take the set and take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Alyssa Mcivor had four kills during the set-ending run.
Once again, the Knights had to rally in the fourth and final set after NJIT opened with a 9-3 advantage. With the Highlanders still lead by six at 11-5, FDU scored five of the next six points to get to within two at 12-10.
NJIT eventually went back up five at 18-13 and continued to lead 20-16, before the Knights made their move. A kill by freshman
Courtney Kovensky (Highland, Calif./Citrus Valley) triggered six straight points, as Mcivor's kill gave FDU the lead for good at 22-20. With match point on the line and the Knights leading 24-23, Mcivor clinched FDU's third victory of the season with a kill, as the Knights closed the set on a 9-3 run.
Mcivor led the Knights on offense with 14 kills and added four block-assists on defense. Sophomore
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) just missed a double-double with a match-high 36 assists and nine digs.
Defensively, three players recorded double-digit digs, with junior
Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) leading the way with 16 and senior
Taylor Roland-Buohl (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and graduate student
Violeta Slabakova (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) adding 13 and 12, respectively. Junior
Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers) recorded a team-best six block-assists and a match-high three blocks.
The Knights will return to action Saturday, Nov. 9 when they host Bryant for a 1 p.m. match at Stratis Arena.
