READING, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's bowling team concluded competition at the Kutztown in ninth place after going 2-1 on the day. The Knights improve to 34-15 on the year.
To open the bracket round of the tournament, FDU took on Stephen F. Austin in a best-of-seven Baker match. The Knights fell, 4-0, with games of 202-168, 181-180, 214-155 and 191-184.
The Knights moved down in the bracket to take on Northeast Conference foe St. Francis Brooklyn, who had defeated Adelphi in the opening round. The Knights went ahead 3-0 with games of 247-173, 176-171 and 232-202. The Terriers fought back with three consecutive wins of their own with scores of 179-158, 234-158 and 191-174, before the Knights outlasted St. Francis in the final game, 189-163.
Monmouth University, who started the day in eighth place, was the Knights final competitor of the day. The Knights once again went ahead 3-0 early on, this time with scores of 267-226, 197-163 and 184-139. The Hawks won game four, 184-172, but FDU retaliated with a 194-188 win in game five to earn the 4-1 victory.
“Losing to SFA 4-0 was a low point for us,” Head Coach Mike LoPresti said. “But the team showed resiliency and went on to win the next two matches of the day. Our young players got a lot of experience today with a seventh game, some very close games, and getting the opportunity to make big shots when it counts.”
“This weekend showed how much this team was affected by long recess since our last competition,” LoPresti said. “The process of getting back to a normal level of play has begun; we expect to play much better next weekend at the conference meet.”
The Knights will take part in the second of three Northeast Conference meets next weekend. The two-day tournament, hosted by Monmouth University, will be held in Bradley Beach, N.J. on Feb. 2 and 3.
