READING, Pa. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's bowling team went 3-3 during the second round of competition at the Kutztown Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 26. The Knights sit in 10th place in the 28-team tournament and move to 32-14 on the season.
The second round of competition included six traditional team games, in which five bowlers from each team record a full score. The five scores are combined against the score of their opponent to determine wins and losses. The total pinfall of the game is combined with other games on the day and Friday's Baker games to produce the overall tournament ranking.
The Knights faced Florida A&M in match one. Backed by a score of 208 from Brianna Carlo (Dumont, NJ/Dumont) and a 221 from Danielle McEwan (Stony Point, NY/Stony Point), the Knights combined for a score of 942. AMU totaled 869 to give the Knights their first win of the day.
FDU faced two-time defending national champion UMES in match two. Scores of 201 from McEwan and 208 from Liat Vizenfeld (Holon, Israel/Campus Kiryat Sharet) put the Knights in position for a total 882, but they could not overpower the Hawks, who bowled a 990.
In game three, the Knights defeated Southern University, 998-881, while led by Michelle Hunzaker (Cary, NC/Green Hope High School)'s 213 and Jessica Wahler (Dunellen, NJ/Dunellen)'s 230. The score of 998 was the Knights' highest score of the day.
Vizenfeld and Hunzaker paced FDU in the fourth match of the day with scores of 224 and 201, respectively. Those scores could not help FDU defeat Valparaiso, who edged FDU by 13 pins, 964-951.
The Knights fell to Wisconsin-Whitewater, 1,106-911 in game five. Freshman Rebecca Fischer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Northgate High School) led all FDU players with a score of 208 but the Knights could not counter the Warhawks
In the final match of the day, the Knights defeated Coppin State University by a score of 900-787. Vizenfeld led the Knights with a score of 199.
“At the moment we are still not playing well,” Head Coach Mike LoPresti said. “When we play highly competitive teams, our lack of cohesiveness is exposed.”
As the 10th seed, the Knights will take on No. 9 Stephen F. Austin in the first round of bracket play on Sunday. If the Knights win three best-of-seven Baker matches, they can finish the 2012 Kutztown Invitational in seventh place.
