HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's bowling team will begin the second half of the season in Reading, Pa. as they compete in the 2013 Kutztown Invitational at Hiester Lanes this weekend.
The Kutztown Invitational is the largest NCAA bowling event of the season with 28 teams in attendance. Fifteen teams ranked among the NTCA coaches' poll top-20 will compete for the Kutztown title. The Knights will have a chance to face strong opposition in Adelphi, Bethune-Cookman, Kutztown, LIU Brooklyn, Maryland Eastern Shore, New Jersey City, Norfolk State, Sacred Heart, Saint Francis University, St. Francis Brooklyn, Stephen F. Austin, Valparaiso, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Competition will begin Friday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m. with the first of six quad Baker matches. On Saturday, teams will compete in six traditional matches beginning at 9:30 a.m. The event will conclude on Sunday with a playoff bracket consisting of best-of-seven Baker matches.
In 2012, the Knights went 12-3 at the Kutztown Invitational and took second place after falling to eventual NCAA National Champions, UMES, 4-1, in the championship match.
The last time FDU competed at Heister Lanes was the 2012 Northeast Conference Championship, where the Knights took second place behind Sacred Heart.
The Knights are 25-9 on the season this year through three tournaments and currently maintain the fifth place ranking in the NTCA coaches' poll. The team is led by senior standout Danielle McEwan (Stony Point, NY/Stony Point) who won her second consecutive Team USA Trial individual championship during the mid-season break. McEwan is supported by junior Michelle Hunzaker (Cary, NC/Green Hope High School) and sophomore Liat Vizenfeld (Holon, Israel/Campus Kiryat Sharet), while a strong group of freshman, including Rebecca Fischer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Northgate High School), Nicolette Sarin (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township High School) and Natasha Ashby (Philadelphia, Pa./Science Leadership Academy), has lifted the Knights this season.
