W. Volleyball Drops 3-2 Heartbreaker at Fordham

Box Score

BRONX, N.Y. -- Facing a 2-0 deficit in Tuesday's match against Fordham, the Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team fought back to tie the score at 2-2 before Fordham won the final set to end the Knights' comeback bid in FDU's second straight 3-2 loss.

Fairleigh Dickinson (3-6) could not overcome Fordham's (2-7) .229 and .357 hitting percentage in the first two sets as the Rams took a 2-0 lead. In the first, FDU took an 18-17 lead on a Fordham attack error. From there, the set was tied four more times, including at 24-24. An FDU attack error and a Fordham kill gave the Rams a 26-24 first-set win.

Fordham was able to control the action in the second thanks to an 8-2 run, and eventually took the set, 25-19.

The Rams were one point away from ending the match with a sweep with a 24-22 lead in the third. The Knights kept the match alive, however, thanks to a Fordham service error and one of senior Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep)'s match-high 26 kills to tie the score at 24-24. After alternating kills the score was tied again at 25-25 before a Jordon Collis (Frisco, TX/Frisco) kill and a Fordham service error gave FDU a 27-25 win.

The Knights were able to overcome 6-0 and 5-0 runs by Fordham in the fourth to come away with a 26-24 win. FDU made a run of its own, finishing the set with 10 of the final 12 points to force the fifth set.

FDU had a chance to win with the score tied at 9-9 in the fifth. Six straight points by the Rams proved to be the difference, however, as the Knights fell by a 15-9 margin as Fordham took the 3-2 victory in the match.

Wheeler led the road team with 26 kills and 18 digs. Freshman Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) put together another strong statistical performance with 41 of FDU's 45 assists to go with 12 digs.

Fordham, which outhit FDU .242 to .160, was paced by Lisa Hipp's double-double with 14 kills and 13 digs. Abigail Konovodoff facilitated the offense with 45 assists, and Maria Rodenberg recorded 19 digs for the Rams.

Up next, the Knights will travel to Queens, N.Y. for the Kaiser Classic. FDU will begin with St. John's on Friday, Sept. 7, at 7 p.m. and will take on Idaho State at 11 a.m. and Bryant at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
