Teaneck, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 loss to the Binghamton University on Sunday, Sept. 16 at University Stadium. With the loss the Knights move to an even 3-3-3 on the season, while the Bearcats improve to 6-2-0.
The Knights and Bearcats were held scoreless through the first 45 minutes of play. Binghamton produced several offensive opportunities and was able to record six shots, with four shots that challenged FDU goal keeper Sage DoVale (Lilburn, Ga./Collins Hill).
FDU's greatest scoring opportunities came in the third minute and the 14th minute. In the first chance, the Knights created a counter attack that set freshman Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau) up for a shot. Rochon's shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into the box where the backline cleared it.
Minutes later, Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) ran the ball down the center of the field and dished it to Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central ) on the left side. Hoekstra beat a defender near the end line but was able to fire off a shot that was tipped by Binghamton keeper, Carrie Martin. The save hit the cross bar and ricocheted back into the box where the defense cleared the opportunity.
At half, the Knights trailed in the shot count, 6-2, with just one shot on goal compared to the Bearcats' four.
Freshman Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) led the Knights' offensive charge in the second half with two near-goal opportunities.
In the 52nd minute Hoekstra passed the ball to Tice at the top of the box where Tice fired a shot that was blocked by Bearcat keeper, Stephanie Speirs.
Two minutes later the Bearcats were awarded a free kick 25 yards from the net on the left side of the field. The shot was blocked by the FDU backline but the header used to clear the ball was stopped by Brittany Walsh of Binghamton. Walsh took a one-touch shot from the right corner of the penalty box and fired into the far corner of the net to give Binghamton a 1-0 lead.
In the final 35 minutes of play the Knights outshot the Bearcats 7-3 with five shots on target. Tice and Elizabeth Langer (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) each recorded two shots on goal in the closing minutes of the half but FDU was unable to find the back of the net before time ran out.
Overall, the Knights and Bearcats were even with 10 shots each, while FDU held the advantage with seven shots on goal, compared to BU's six.
The loss concludes FDU's nonconference slate, where they finish with an even 3-3-3 record.
