BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson men's soccer team suffered a tough 1-0 defeat Sunday afternoon to Memphis, concluding its play in the UAB “Soccer For A Cure” Classic. With the victory, the Tigers improve to 2-3-1 on the season, while the Knights fall to 3-2-1 overall. FDU finishes the tournament 0-1-1.

Redshirt sophomore Alfredo Malaret (Caracas, Venezuela/Cumbres De Caracas), who was playing in his first career match as a Knight, played well between the pipes, making five saves, while facing 10 shots. The only goal he allowed was to Mark Sherrod on a penalty kick in the 29th minute.

Memphis outshot FDU 5-1 over the first 45 minutes, but the Knights were more on the offensive in the second half, outshooting the Tigers 8-6 and finishing the match down 11-9 in total shots.

FDU managed only two shots on goal as senior Karlis Putans (Riga, Latvia/University of Latvia) and freshman Simon Doherty (West Lothian, Scotland/West Calder) each recorded one. Memphis goalkeeper Connor Hurley made both saves.

"It was a bit of an unlucky result for us, losing on a penalty kick to a good Memphis team," Head Coach Seth Roland said. "We were a little off rhythm in the first half but corrected that at halftime as we came out and created numerous chances to tie the game in the second half. Unfortunately, Jeffrey (Barrenechea)'s rocket from 30 yards out hit the crossbar, and their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves as well. Overall, it was a great experience to come down to Alabama and compete well against two very tough Conference USA teams."

The Knights will return to action on Friday Sept. 21 against Penn at the Princeton Invitational in Princeton, N.J. Kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.

Washington finishes ahead of Memphis due to head-to-head victory.
