EASTON, Pa. -- Senior
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) put together another 20-20 performance with 22 kills and 21 digs as the Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team took down in-state rival Saint Peter's 3-1 on Friday at the Lafayette College Tournament.
For the Knights' captain, it is her third match with at least 20 kills and 20 digs in just six matches this season as the Knights improved their record to 2-4 and Saint Peter's dropped to 1-4.
FDU was dominant in the first set with a .500 team hitting percentage thanks to 14 kills to just two errors. The Knights jumped to a 9-1 lead with early kills from Wheeler, freshman
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights) and sophomore
Hanifa Addi (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers).
The rest of the first set, the Burgundy and Blue maintained its lead with Saint Peter's attack errors in addition to kills by Addi, Gibbons, freshman
Jordon Collis (Frisco, TX/Frisco) and sophomore
Taylor Roland-Buohl (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) en route to a 25-9 first set win.
After dropping the second set 25-21, the third set again was in favor of the Knights, 25-17. With the score tied 10-10, FDU went on a 10-0 lead to put the set out of reach. Freshman
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano), who led the Knights with 36 assists, held serve for nine of the points during the run.
Moving into the fourth, it looked like Saint Peter's might crawl back into the match. Down 7-4, FDU went on an 8-0 run to turn its three point deficit into a five point lead at 12-7. The Knights remained hot by scoring 13 of the next 20 points for a 25-14 win to close out the Peacocks.
Lauren Behrens lead Saint Peter's with 11 kills Kristina Baehr helped her team's offense with 28 assists.
For FDU, Roland-Buohl and sophomore
Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) checked in with 15 and 14 digs apiece. The Knights' .243 hitting percentage was their best since hitting .239 in their other win against Providence. Defensively, FDU held the Peacocks to a .079 hitting percentage, which is the lowest by an opponent this season.
Tomorrow, the Knights will continue action at the Lafayette College Tournament with a noon match against Delaware State and a 5 p.m. showdown with the host team Lafayette.
