W. Volleyball Gets Tripped Up by Rider 3-2

Box Score
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. -- A furious comeback by the Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team fell just short on Wednesday as the Knights fell, 3-2, to nonconference opponent Rider on the road at Alumni Gymnasium.

Dropping the first two sets by scores of 25-11 and 25-20, FDU (1-4) reversed its fortune with wins the following two sets, 25-21 and 25-23, to push Rider (3-2) to a fifth set. In the decisive frame, however, the Broncs took five of the final eight points for a 15-13 set win, sending the Knights home with a 3-2 loss.

Rider had its offense going in the first set and finished strong with a 13-4 run to close out a 25-11 win. For the home team, it was their best offensive set with 16 kills and one attack error for a .469 hitting percentage. Overall Rider had a .192 hitting percentage compared to FDU's .133.

In the second, the Knights kept the scoring tight and trailed by just one when Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep)'s kill cut Rider's lead down to 21-20. The Broncs were able to come away with the next four points to extend their lead to 2-0.

With score deadlocked at 21-21 in the third, it was FDU's turn to make a run. Two kills by Wheeler, another by junior Taylor Roland-Buohl (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and two Rider attack errors gave the Knights a 25-21 win.

Needing another win to extend the match, FDU responded in a big way. Down by five points in the early part of the set, the Knights rallied and took the set, 25-23.

FDU's comeback came just a little bit short when the Broncs secured a 15-13 win to earn a 3-2 victory.

Wheeler picked up her third double-double and second performance with at least 20 kills and 20 digs, finishing Wednesday with a match-high 28 kills to go with 20 digs. Freshman Jordon Collis (Frisco, TX/Frisco) also had double-digit kills with 13, while fellow classmate Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) dished out 47 assists.

Rider had three players with double-digit kills. Jaclyn Webber led the Broncs with 16.

FDU will look to bounce back on Friday, Aug. 31, at the Lafayette Tournament in Easton, Pa. The Knights begin with Saint Peter's at 3 p.m. and will play again the next day against Delaware State and Lafayette.
