Teaneck, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team fought to a 0-0 tie with Air Force on Sunday, Aug. 26. The draw was the Knights' third in four games, moving their season record to 0-1-3 on the season. The Falcons are now 2-1-1 on the year.
Air Force held a one shot advantage with 13 attempts, but the Knights recorded six shots on goal compared to the Falcon's two.
The Knights started the first half quickly, mounting an attack on a through ball from Elizabeth Langer (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) to Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central ) in the opening minutes of play. Although the play was broken up, FDU continued to pressure the Air Force defense.
The Falcons created two scoring opportunities in the first 30 minutes of play but were unable to take the lead.
FDU created their final attack of the half in the 37th minute when a cross from Mackenzie Reese (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area ) reached Lindzy Williams (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood) in the six-yard box. Williams took a shot that was stopped by Falcon keeper, Kelly Stambaugh.
After the first 45 minutes, the Knights led the shot count, 5-4.
The second half saw six shots from Air Force, with only one that challenged DoVale. The Knights challenged the Falcons four times but the score remained even after ninety minutes.
For the third time in two weeks, the Knights went into overtime. The overtime periods saw defensive play, with only one shot on goal through 20 minutes.
“I am very pleased with our performance today,” said Interim Head Coach Marco Masucci. “We played a tough team and we continued to show our improvement. That gives me a lot of confidence for our future. We need to continue to work on set plays and finishing, but there were a lot of positives to take away today.”
The Knights return to action on Friday, Aug. 31 with a home game against Delaware State. Kickoff at University Stadium is slated for 7:00 pm.
