The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball was blanked its final regular season game of the season on a gorgeous Sunday afternoon by LIU Brooklyn, 14-0, at LIU Field in Brooklyn, NY. With the victory, the Blackbirds take the series by winning the final three games and finish their season with an overall record of 22-33 (13-19 NEC), while the Knights fall to 24-26-1 (18-14 NEC) on the year.
With its loss on Sunday, FDU will be the No. 4 seed in the NEC Tournament and will take on top-seeded Monmouth on Thursday, May 17 with first pitch slated for Noon at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT.
The Knights could not get any facets of their game going in the contest. LIU's starter Jordan Wilcox stifled the offense over 8.0 innings of work. He allowed only three hits, while walking none and striking out four.
Freshman
Brendan Butler (W. Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) was tagged with the loss on the bump. He was charged with six earned runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings, while walking three and striking out two. The bullpen allowed eight earned runs on 12 hits over the final three innings.
The Blackbirds scored single runs in the first and third innings before crossing home four times in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Leading 8-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh, LIU scored six more times to go up 14-0. The home team pounded out 21 hits on the afternoon and took advantage of two FDU errors.
“We did not play well today, but I think the guys are looking ahead to the playoffs,” Head Coach
Gary Puccio said. “Hopefully, we will do some damage there. It was still an outstanding regular season. Winning 18 NEC games is a great accomplishment.”
