Softball Moves to 6-0 with Two Wins Over Coppin State

The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team continued its success at the UMBC Retriever Classic on Saturday, March 3.  The Knights defeated Coppin State, 12-1 and 6-2 in a double-header in Baltimore, MD.  FDU improves to 6-0 on the season with two wins on the day.

The Knights took a two-run lead in the first inning on two unearned runs.  Coppin State picked up one run on three hits in the second inning but were unable to catch up to the Knights.

Paige Castro (Elk Grove, CA/Franklin) doubled to left center to start the second inning before freshman Cindy Zamudio (Wilmington, Calif./Redondo Union) tripled down the right-field line to drive Castro home.  Elizabeth Woidt continued the streak of extra-base hits with a double.  After Zamudio scored on a wild pitch, Caitlin Bradac (Garden Grove, CA/Garden Grove) singled through the right side to drive home Woidt.  The Knights continued a hitting streak and were able to score runs on six hits during the third inning.

FDU extended their lead with two more runs in the fourth and one run in the fifth.

Zamudio and Bryana Dorado (Oxnard, Calif./Oxnard) each went 2-for-3, with one RBI in game one.  Megan Reiner (Los Angeles, Calif./John Marshall) led the team with two RBIs.  Reiner also earned the win in game one.  She pitched five innings, while allowing just one run on five hits.  The rookie struck out six batters.

The Knights got on the board first in game two after Dorado, Castro and Marikka Benson (Lacey, WA/Timberline) reached base early in the second inning.  With Castro on second, Lauren Hamilton (Woodinville, WA/Woodinville) singled to third base to drive home the first run of the game.

Coppin State responded with one run to tie the game in the bottom of the second.

The Knights reclaimed the lead in the third, when Woidt doubled to center field and advanced to third on a throwing error.  A groundout by Bradac drove home Woidt to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage.

Hamilton singled down the left field line in the top of the fourth.  Zamudio doubled to left field to drive Hamilton home and give the Knights a 3-1 lead.

The Knights sealed the win in the top of the sixth when Zamudio once again drove Hamilton home on an extra-base hit.  After Zamudio scored on a passed ball, Woidt homered to left field to put the Knights up, 6-1.

Coppin State would score one more run before the game was called due to darkness.

Zamudio drove in two runs in game two for FDU, while Woidt, Bradac and Hamilton each added one RBI.

Bradac earned the win in the Knights' second game.  She struck out three batters, walked none and allowed just two runs on two hits.

The Knights travel to Kissimmee, FL March 9-17 for the Rebel Spring Games.
