M. Tennis Starts Spring Break on the Right Foot with 5-2 Win Over Boston University

Box Score

Three convincing wins in doubles action were the building blocks for the Fairleigh Dickinson men's tennis team's 5-2 win over Boston University on Tuesday in the first of three spring break matches in Palm Springs, CA.

“We played very well in doubles, and that momentum carried over to help us beat a tough Boston University team,” Head Coach Ira Miller said.

The Knights (4-6) jumped on the Terriers (0-10) by winning all three doubles matches by scores of 8-2. At the top spot, Northeast Conference Player of the Month Ibrahim Shams (Cairo, Egypt/Manor House) paired up with freshman Arvis Berzins (Adazi, Latvia/Riga Language School) to beat Josh Friedman and Jesse Frieder for the duo's seventh victory of season.

The No. 2 team of Dominic Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) and Yuri Gricheno (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Amorim)  came away with a win over the Terriers' Alen Hallenback and Michael Kopelman. The Knights made it a clean sweep in doubles thanks to Mark Hemy (Suffolk, England/Ipswich School) and Peter Skvarka (Banska Bystrica, Slovakia/Gymnazium J.G. Tajovskeho) taking down Bill Kring and Regis Chang at No. 3.

Berzins and Shams also added to the team score with singles wins. Berzins improved his record at No. 1 singles to 5-1 with his 6-2, 7-6 (4) decision over Freidman, while Shams bumped up his No. 2 singles mark to 5-1 after his 6-1, 6-3 victory against Frieder.

M. Hemy was able to come away with another of FDU's points with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Chang at No. 4 singles. Skvarka's No. 6 singles win over Alex Green, 6-1, 6-1, was his second in as many matches.

FDU will try to make it two wins in a row with tomorrow's 12 p.m. showdown against Gonzaga in Palm Springs, CA.
