W. Fencing Competes at the Northwestern Duals


The Fairleigh Dickinson women's fencing team picked up four dual wins in the Knights' trip to Evanston, IL for the Northwestern Duals on Saturday and Sunday.

After falling to the host Northwestern Wildcats to kick off Saturday's action, FDU earned a 23-4 win over California Institute of Technology behind 9-0 advantages in epee and sabre. The Knights dropped other matches to No. 2 Princeton, Stanford, Stevens Institute of Technology and No. 10 Duke on Saturday.

On day two, the Knights were able to right the ship and win three in their five duals. The Burgundy and Blue took down Detroit-Mercy by a 22-5 margin before beating Lawrence, 17-10, and Cleveland State, 20-7.

The sabre squad turned in wins over Cal Tech, Stanford, Steven Tech, Detroit-Mercy, Cleveland State and UC San Diego led by sophomore Hanna Heldenmuth (Miami, Fla./Keystone National), who went 20-11 overall. Junior Sophia Bischof (Bonn, Germany/Albert Einstein Gymnasium) compiled a 14-9 record, while freshman Kathryn Heaney (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) and junior Genele Streitz (Mendham, NJ/West Morris Mendham High School) went 14-13 and 6-18, respectively.

Senior Annie Kazarjan (Budapest, Hungary/Koecsey Ferenc Gimnazium) headlined the epee team's effort with a 16-13 mark as the squad defeated Cal Tech, Detroit-Mercy and Lawrence. Junior Christine Forsythe (Hackettstown, NJ/Hackettstown) (14-15) and senior Evgeniya Tyrtova (Omst, Russia/Liceum #66) (9-20) also added to the Knights' win total.

Freshman Alix Lerch (Puebla, Puebla, Mexico/Instituto Oriente) made a splash in her FDU debut, going 25-6 to lead the foil squad over the weekend. Meena Murugappan (Lusaka, Zambia/The International School of Lusaka ), Yeliz Inalman (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) and Alexis Camara (Tampa, FL/Freedom) also saw action for the Knights at foil.

FDU will return to action for the NYU Squad Championships in New York, NY beginning at 8 a.m.
