HACKENSACK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team will take the court for the final time this season when the Knights take on visiting Bryant on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. at Stratis Arena. The Northeast Conference match will also mark Senior Day for FDU with a ceremony to celebrate graduating seniors
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) and
Lawryn Fowler (Gaithersburg, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) before the first serve.
The Knights (8-20, 4-11 NEC) will look to end the season on a positive note and attempt to snap a six-match losing streak. Bryant (11-22, 5-10 NEC) will also be playing its final match of the season. The Knights are in seventh place in the NEC and the Bulldogs are in sixth.
Wheeler has left her mark as one of the best players to ever don the Burgundy and Blue. She holds FDU's career kills record with 1,821 entering the weekend. The California native also broke the program record for single-season kills in 2011 with 528 and has led the NEC in kills each of the last two seasons. The two-time All-NEC selection currently ranks 10th in the nation with 4.59 kills per set and 11th nationally with 5.12 points per set.
Fowler has also proven to be a vital part of the Knights' success since her arrival on campus in 2009. The senior from Maryland has racked up 100 career kills including a career-high 51 as a freshman. Moving to a more defensive role as a sophomore, Fowler had a career-best 81 digs during her sophomore season. In 12 matches as a senior, she has six kills, two assists and two block assists.
The Knights were supposed to play a match against Manhattan on Wednesday, but it was canceled due to inclement weather. FDU's last action came on Nov. 4 when the Knights dropped a 3-1 road decision at Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa. In the loss, redshirt junior
Violeta Slabakova (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) set a season high with 17 kills, while freshman
Jordon Collis (Frisco, TX/Frisco) added 16 to go with 11 from fellow freshman
Maddie Gibbons (Columbus, Ohio/Grandview Heights). The Knights had the same amount of kills as the Colonials (56), but committed 24 attack errors to RMU's 14.
Sunday will be the third meeting between Bryant and FDU on the season. On Sept. 8, FDU cruised to a 3-1 win over the Bulldogs as part of the Kaiser Classic in Queens, N.Y. Less than a month later in Smithfield, R.I., Bryant was able to turn the tables on the Knights, however, sending FDU to a 3-2 loss.
The Bulldogs played today and lost 3-1 at Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Conn. Bryant freshman Claire Van Dyk leads the offensive charge with 312 kills. On defense, the Bulldogs' Macy Mitravich paces the team with 315 digs.
For FDU, freshman setter
Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) has racked up 934 assists, which is fifth in single-season history.
