TEANECK, N.J. – The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team concluded the 2012 season with a 1-0 overtime loss to LIU Brooklyn at University Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 28. With the loss the Knights finish the season with a record of 5-11-3 and an NEC mark of 2-8. The Blackbirds advance to the NEC Tournament with a regular season record of 8-7-3 and a conference mark of 6-1-3.
The lone goal of the game came two minutes into the first overtime period when Katie Egan passed a through ball to Toni Smith in the middle of the field. Smith found a break in the FDU backline and placed a shot to the lower left corner of the net to give LIU the 'W' and a bid to the postseason.
The Knights and Blackbirds battled to a scoreless tie through the first half. The Blackbirds constructed six opportunities, with four that challenged FDU keeper, Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ). Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) recorded the Knights' only shot of the first half in the 35th minute.
The Blackbirds' best chances of the second half came midway through the period. A corner kick set Smith up for a shot that was saved by Burr before a second quick shot was knocked out by the rookie keeper.
Julie Woolridge (St. John's, Newfoundland/Bishops College) produced two shots on goal from free kicks in the second half and led the Knights to outshoot LIU, 4-3 in the second half.
After 90 minutes of play the score was tied at zero. LIU led the shot count with nine, while FDU had recorded five. The Knights had two shots on goal compared to the Blackbirds' six in regulation.
The Blackbirds sealed the win in the opening minute of the first golden-goal overtime period to end the game.
The Knights honored seniors Francesca Yaccarine (Freehold, N.J./Red Bank Catholic), Julie Woolridge (St. John's, Newfoundland/Bishops College) and Maria Palombo (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood High School) prior to the game.
The 2012 FDU women's soccer team saw the single-season point record broken by freshman Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central ) and the team win more games than any FDU team since 2005. The team also scored more goals than any team since 2005 and held opponents to the fewest goals of any team since 2002.
