W. Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision to CCSU

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision on the road at Central Connecticut State on Sunday in Northeast Conference play. With the loss, the Knights fall to 8-15 (4-6 NEC), while the Blue Devils improve to 13-11 (9-2 NEC).

Despite the defeat, freshman Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) recorded a team-high 31 assists to bring her total to 762 to move past Randi Kluemper for ninth all time in single-season history.

During the match, CCSU, with its .419 hitting percentage, outhit FDU, which had a .162 hitting percentage. The Blue Devils won the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-10, before coming away with a 29-27 win in the final set.

CCSU took a 9-5 advantage in the first set, but two FDU kills and a service ace from junior Taylor Roland-Buohl (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) cut the lead to 9-8. The Knights kept the set close until a CCSU 4-0 run gave the Blue Devils a 20-15 lead. FDU managed three more points in the set, but fell 25-18.

The second set was not kind to the Knights as the Blue Devils jumped out to an 8-0 lead then a 13-1 lead. FDU showed life with a 4-1 run to trim CCSU's advantage from 17-3 to 18-7. From there the Blue Devils cruised to a 25-10 set win to take a 2-0 lead.

The Knights dug themselves a 17-7 hole in the third set. With their backs against the wall, FDU reeled off 15 of the next 20 points to even the score at 22-22 with a run culminating with a kill from redshirt junior Violeta Slabakova (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica).

The score would again be tied at 23-23, 25-25, 26-26 and 27-27. CCSU's Emily Cochran picked up two kills to finish off the match as the Blue Devils won the final set, 29-27.

For CCSU, Cochran and Jamie Rademacher racked up 13 kills apiece, while Makenna Lommori dished out 37 assists.

The Knights received a match-high 18 kills from senior Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) to go with seven from freshman Jordon Collis (Frisco, TX/Frisco). Roland-Buohl led the defense with seven digs.

With 410 kills this season, Wheeler is 15 away from tying Elena Schmidt's 2005 mark of 425 for fourth most in team history for a single season. Wheeler has already recorded the first, third and seventh most kills in single season history.  

The Knights will continue NEC play on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when they host LIU Brooklyn for a 7 p.m. match at Stratis Arena.
