W. Volleyball Gets Back on Track With 3-0 Win at Quinnipiac

Box Score

HAMDEN, Conn. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 win at Quinnipiac on Saturday to snap a four-match losing streak in Northeast Conference action.

The Knights (8-14, 4-5 NEC) have now swept the season series against the Bobcats (1-16, 0-8 NEC), winning both matches by 3-0 margins. FDU won sets by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-9 on Saturday.

A double-double from senior Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) with 15 kills and 10 digs to go with a match-high five aces, as well as a match-best 28 assists courtesy of freshman Allison Butler (Plano, Texas/Plano) helped FDU to its sixth win away from Stratis Arena this season.

In the first set, the Knights found themselves in a 12-10 hole before a Quinnipiac service error and kills from Wheeler and freshman Jordon Collis (Frisco, TX/Frisco) allowed FDU to even the score at 12-12. Collis was second on the team with seven kills on the day.

FDU was able to take a 14-13 lead three points later on a Violeta Slabakova (Shelby Township, Mich./Utica) kill. Later in the set with a 19-17 lead, the Knights went on a 5-0 run to claim a 24-17 advantage. An FDU service error followed by a Quinnipiac service error allowed FDU to take the first set, 25-18.

The second set was trending in the Bobcats' favor before a 7-0 streak turned FDU's 17-13 deficit into a 20-17 lead. Quinnipiac mounted a comeback and eventually took a 22-21 edge. Down the stretch, senior Lawryn Fowler (Gaithersburg, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) and Wheeler came up with two kills apiece to give the Knights the set at 25-23.

The Knights dominated the third set and clung to a commanding 19-5 lead. From there, FDU scored six of the next 10 points for a 25-9 win for the sweep.

Sophomore Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) turned in a strong defensive effort with a match-high 13 digs, while Quinnipiac was paced by Tanner Celestin's eight kills and Brittanie Robinson's one solo block and two block assists on the defensive end.

With 731 assists so far in her freshman season, Butler is now 23 assists away from tying Randi Kluemper for ninth all time in FDU single-season history. Kluemper accumulated 754 during the 2001 season.

FDU will play again tomorrow in a 1 p.m. match at Central Connecticut State in New Britain, Conn.
