W. Soccer Falls 1-0 to Bryant in Double Overtime

Box Score

SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team dropped a heart breaking double-overtime loss to Bryant, 1-0, on Sunday, Oct. 14.  With the loss the Knights fall to 5-8-3 on the year with a 2-5 Northeast Conference mark.  The Bulldogs move to 9-8 on the year with a 4-4 conference record.

After battling for 105 minutes, the Bulldogs found the back of the net when Shana Follette trapped a rebound on a blocked shot by Rachel Ivanicki and shot to the near post.

The Knights were outshot, 23-9, with a 7-1 disadvantage in shots on goal.  Freshman Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ) made six saves for the Knights and did not allow a goal through regulation for the second-consecutive game.

Bryant outshot FDU, 7-1, through the first half but produced just one shot that challenged Burr.

FDU's lone shot in the first half was produced by a corner kick.  Julie Woolridge (St. John's, Newfoundland/Bishops College) placed a shot that was headed by Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) but the attempt was blocked by the Bryant defense in the 14th minute.

The Bulldogs continued to pressure the Knight back line in the second half and produced seven more shots in the early part of the half.  In the 68th minute, Bryant was awarded a penalty kick.  Burr was credited with the save as Alex Bengston missed the shot on the Bulldogs' best scoring chance of the half.

In the final ten minutes of regulation, the Knights increased their offensive opportunities.  The team saw shots from Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) and Elizabeth Langer (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) before a free kick by Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) went just wide.  Freshmen Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central ) and Esther Rochon (Saint Romuald, Quebec/College Francois-Xavier-Garneau) added to the pressure with shots in the final minute of the second half.

The second half saw 10 shots by the Bulldogs and six from FDU.

After recording no shots in the first overtime period, the Knights began the second period fighting.  Shots from Hoekstra and Lindzy Williams (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood) both went high.  Follette and Ivanicki both recorded shots in the 104th minute that were stopped by Burr, before the duo challenged FDU again a minute later.  The shot from Ivanicki was blocked by Burr, but Follette fired the rebound to find the goal and give Bryant the win in the second sudden-death overtime period.

The Knights will face Saint Francis PA on Friday, Oct. 19 in Teaneck, N.J.  Kickoff at University Stadium is scheduled for 4 p.m. as part of a men's/women's double header.
