TEANECK, N.J. -- The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team defeated Wager, 3-0, on Friday, Oct 12. The Knights improve to 5-7-3 on the year with a 2-4 mark in Northeast Conference action. The Seahawks drop to 4-10, with a 1-4 NEC record.
The Knights used three first-half goals and a continuous stream of pressure to secure the win. FDU outshot Wagner, 22-1, and allowed no shots on goal. The Knights challenged the Wagner keeper on 11 occasions.
A free kick by Amanda Goulet (Quebec City, Quebec/Shattuck-St. Mary's ) gave the Knights their initial lead in the 21st minute. With the ball placed right outside the penalty box, Goulet placed the shot just out of reach of the Wagner keeper to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Ten minutes later Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) placed a corner kick at the far post. Freshman Carly Tice (Highland Falls, N.Y./James I. O'Neill ) headed the ball toward the opposite post and found the net for her first collegiate goal, giving FDU a 2-0 lead.
The Knights sealed the victory three minutes later when Tice dished the ball to Rachel Hoekstra (Bowmanville, Ontario/Clarington Central ) near the center of the penalty box. Hoekstra fired and scored from 18 yards out to put the Knights on top, 3-0.
Freshman Felicia Burr (Bellingham, Mass./Blackstone-Millville ) earned her first win in goal for the Knights, recording a shutout.
Hoekstra's goal was the ninth of the season and brought her point total to 20, entering her into the FDU record books by tying the single-season record for goals in a season and setting the single-season point record.
The Knights travel to Smithfield, R.I. on Sunday for a noon kickoff against Bryant.
