Box Score
The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team evened its record at 2-2 after earning a 3-1 decision over the Rider Broncs Friday in Easton, PA, at the first match of the Lafayette Tournament.
After dropping the first game, 25-18, the Knights turned the tables with 25-18 and 25-19 wins in games two and three. In the fourth set, FDU put the Broncs away with a 25-20 win to drop Rider's record to 1-3 on the season.
Knight's Head Coach
Stacey Recanati was pleased with how her team started the tournament.
“We played a great match tonight,” Recanati said. “After coming out flat in set one, we were able to turn the match around and win in four sets. We had strong performances by two of our captains,
Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) with 31 digs and four service aces and
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) with 24 kills.”
For Semler, it was her first match with 30 or more digs of the season, a feat she accomplished four times in 2010. Wheeler's 24 kills were a match high, to go along with nine digs and two block assists.
After struggling with their attack in the opening set with nine kills to 11 errors, the Knights improved to the tune of 21 kills, 11 of which were credited to Wheeler, to just five errors in the second game. Over the final two sets, FDU compiled 27 kills to 13 errors.
On the afternoon,
Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) had a season-high 42 assists, while freshman
Deborah Hong (Rutherford, N.J./Rutherford) reached 10 digs for the first time in her young career.
At the net,
Meghan Alger (Cheltenham, MD/Bishop McNamara) came up with two solo blocks and three block assists to lead all players.
FDU and Rider will square off again Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. in Hackensack for the Knights' home opener.
The Knights have two matches on the schedule for tomorrow beginning with Saint Peter's at noon, followed by Lafayette at 5 p.m.
