The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team extended its win streak to three games with a 1-0 victory over St. Peter's College on Friday, Sept. 16 in Teaneck, NJ. The Knights improve to 3-2-1 on the season, while the Peahens fall to 0-6-1.
The Knights lone goal of the match came from senior Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial) in the 69th minute. Lindzy Williams (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood) fed Sherman the ball from 25 yards outside the goal. Sherman dribbled into the box and fired a shot past SPC keeper, Caitlin Hoffer, and into the center of the net. It was Sherman's first goal of the season.
The Knights led the attack from the beginning of the game and tallied 14 shots in the first half. Although FDU was able to get five shots on goal, the score remained tied at zero at halftime. The Peahens recorded just one shot during the first 45 minutes.
St. Peter's adjusted during the half and came out strong on the attack in the second period. The Peahens converted four shots in the first 11 minutes of the half. Two of those shots were blocked by FDU defenders, while two were saved by goal keeper Sage DoVale (Lilburn, Ga./Collins Hill).
After two shots from freshman Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy), Williams assisted Sherman to enable the Knights take the lead.
The Knights played strong defense in the final 20 minutes of play, holding the Peahens to just three shots.
DoVale recorded her third shutout of the season with three saves and currently holds a save percentage of .893. Prior to the matchup with St. Peter's, DoVale was ranked 30th in the nation in save percentage.
FDU recorded a season-high 22 shots, with 10 shots on goal, while the Peahens finished with eight shots and five on goal. The win helps the Knights exceed their 2010 record of 2-16.
The Knights take one day off before traveling to Philadelphia to face St. Joseph's. Kick off at Fennesy Field is slated for 1:00 pm.
