The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team is on its first win streak of the season as they swept both ends of a seven-inning doubleheader against Wagner on Saturday at Richland County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, NY. The Knights took the opener, 2-0, thanks to strong pitching and defense, while scoring seven runs in the third and fourth innings to hold on for a 7-5 victory in the nightcap. The four-game win streak is FDU's the longest such streak since they won four in a row 51 weeks ago, and the squad will be looking for its first NEC sweep in two seasons on Sunday when they swept Long Island in 2009. With the victories, the Knights improve to 12-32 (9-18 NEC) on the season, while the Seahawks fall to 17-29 (11-16 NEC) overall.
Out of the gate in game one, the Knights scored twice in the top of the first to take an early 2-0 lead. On the first pitch of the game, junior Ryan Kresky (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) hit a slicing fly ball down the left field line that one-hopped against the fence for a double. Senior Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) was first pitch swinging and knocked a single through the right side to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Senior Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) then came to the plate and delivered an opposite-field double that landed on the third base line and bounced into the FDU bullpen. Kresky scored easily, and LaForge raced around the bases to give the Knights an early two-run lead. On the play, Dillon was thrown out at third by the catcher for the first out of the inning.
Over the final 6.5 innings of play, pitching and defense was the story for both teams. Three Knights' pitchers combined to allow only five hits over their 7.0 shutout innings. Senior starter Nick Melchiorre (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Holy Cross) (3-7) picked up his first NEC victory of the season by allowing four hits in 5.0 innings of work. He walked two and struck out three. In the process, Melchiorre lower his ERA under four runs per game to 3.97 for the season. Senior Zach Kisling (Marlboro, NJ/Marlboro Central) pitched a scoreless sixth, while fellow classmate Spencer Kelly (Rockville, MD/The Bullis School) pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to earn his eighth save of the season.
Dale Hering pitched a complete game effort for Wagner as he allowed two earned runs on seven hits, while walking one and striking out three. At one point he retired 15-straight batters until Kresky knocked a one-out double off the fence in right-center field in the top of the sixth.
Three of the four hits the Knights collected were doubles as Kresky went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored, while Dillon collected the other double and drove in both runs.
In game two, Wagner struck first in the bottom of the second with an unearned run to take a 1-0 lead as Gaby Ramirez knocked in the runner from third with two outs with a line-drive single to center field.
However, the Knights put up a four-spot in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead. The No. 9 hitter, sophomore Jonathan Torres (Miramar, FL/Pine Crest), hit the first pitch of the inning off the top of the wall in straight-away left field. Kresky then knocked an RBI single to left to drive home Torres to tie the game at one. LaForge perfectly executed a hit-and-run call with a single to right field to put runners on the corners with still no one out. Dillon drew a walk to load the bases, and sophomore Eric Anderson (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) drew an RBI bases-loaded walk to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. With one down, junior Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) extended the lead to 4-1 as he drilled a two-run single to center to score LaForge and Dillon.
With runners on second and third and one out in the bottom of the third, Jon Lucas's RBI groundout to first base cut the Knights' lead to 4-2.
FDU scored three more times with two outs in the top of the fourth to extend its lead to 7-2. With one out, Kresky picked up his third single of the day to start the rally. LaForge then hit a comebacker to the pitcher who threw the ball into center field, allowing Kresky to advance to third. Dillon then walked for the third time in the game to load the bases. After the Seahawks got the second out of the inning, senior DJ Robinson (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), who came in as a pinch-hitter, ripped a two-run single to left field, but on the play, the ball went under the glove of the Wagner left field to allow Dillon to score all the way from first and extend FDU's lead to five runs.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Wagner got three runs back to cut the lead to 7-5. Eddie Brown knocked an RBI double down the left field line to drive home the first run with no outs. Tommy Higgins followed with an RBI single to plate the second run of the inning. With runners on first and third and two outs, the Seahawks capped their scoring by scoring the final run of the inning on a balk.
However, the Knights bullpen was able to close out the final two innings to give the Knights the doubleheader sweep, 7-5.
Senior Chris Theordor (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) (1-7), a Staten Island native, picked up his first victory of the season. He went 4-plus innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits, while walking one and striking out one. Sophomore Matt Cadigan (Freehold, N.J./Freehold), who came into the game in the fifth inning, pitched marvelously over 2.1 innings of relief. The southpaw allowed only one hit, while walking one and striking out two. With one out in the seventh, Kelly was summoned into the game to get the final two outs and in the process, picked up his ninth save of the season and his fourth-straight over the four-game win streak.
Wagner starter Mark Holmes was charged with the loss as the Knights scored four runs, all earned on five hits in 2.1 innings.
Kresky had a big game two as he went a perfect 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Knights' nine-hit performance. LaForge and Dillon each scored two runs, while Robinson and Eliasen each had two RBI's.
Kresky is currently hitting .818 in the series (9-for-11) with two doubles, one triple, three runs scored, one stolen base and one RBI out of the lead-off spot. He has collected a hit in his last five plate at-bats.
The Knights and Seahawks will be back in action on Sunday to complete their four-game NEC series as FDU will be looking to win five games in a row. First-pitch at Richland County Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
