The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team salvaged the final game of a four-game NEC series on Sunday as they defeated Long Island, 4-1, at the Naimoli Family Baseball Complex in Teaneck. The win snaps a six-game losing streak and is the first ever victory for FDU at the new field. With the victory, the Knights improve to 6-21 (3-9 NEC) on the season, while the Blackbirds fall to 15-12 (8-4 NEC) overall.
Junior Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ) (1-2) was dominant on the mound for the Knights. Getting ahead of hitters all day long and using his curve ball effectively, the righty allowed only one earned run on six hits, while striking out three and walking one in his 9.0 innings of work.
The Knights wasted no time getting on the board as they took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Senior Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL) doubled to right field with two outs. The next batter, senior Erik Pollag (Sicklerville, NJ), crushed the first pitch he saw off the fence in center field for an RBI double, scoring Dillon.
In the top of the third, the Blackbirds used a two-out rally of their own to tie the game at one. Tyler Jones drove home Sam Sciamarelli, who tripled off the fence in center field with two outs, with an RBI single to center.
With the game still tied at one in the sixth, the Knights scored three times to take a 4-1 lead. Senior Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ) doubled to center field to lead off the inning. After Dillon grounded out to the pitcher for the first out, Pollag drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. The next batter, sophomore Eric Anderson (Allendale, NJ) smoked a three-run home run, his second of the season, over the fence in right-center field, giving the Knights a 4-1 advantage. FDU had a chance to tack on more runs as they had runners at second and third with one out but failed to push more runners across the plate.
The four runs were all the Knights would need as Eliasen dominated the Blackbirds' offense, giving the Knights the 4-1 victory.
Junior Matt Holsman (Coral Springs, FL) led the Knights' nine-hit attack by going 3-for-4 with two doubles. LaForge added two hits, including a double.
The Knights will return to action on Wednesday, April 13, when they travel to Jersey City, NJ to take on Saint Peter's. First-pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
