Men's Basketball Breaks a Pair of Losing Streaks, Defeats Sacred Heart, 85-74

The Fairleigh Dickinson men's basketball team snapped a pair of losing streaks Thursday night as they defeated Sacred Heart, 85-74, at the Pitt Center in Fairfield, CT.  The win snaps a season-high 11-game losing streak and a 14-game Northeast Conference losing streak.  With the victory, the Knights improve to 5-23 (3-14 NEC) on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 10-18 overall.

The Knights took control of the game with a 30-12 run that started with 1:58 to go in the first half and ended with 12:51 remaining in the game.  Trailing 37-31, the Knights ended the first half on a 12-1 run, including the final nine points of the half to take a 43-38 halftime lead.

With 12:51 to go in the game, the Knights led 61-49 and were in complete control.  The lead grew to as much as 18 at 73-55 with 7:52 remaining.

Senior Terence Grier (Cranford, NJ/St. Thomas More Prep) had his best game as a Knight.  He had a career night as he scored a career-high 34 points on a career-best 14 field goals on 22 attempts.  He also tied a career high in three-pointers with four on five attempts.  He had 14 points at the break before exploding for 20 in the second half.

Senior John Galvin (Weston, CT/Weston) had a solid performance as he picked up his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Senior Mike Scott (Philadelphia, PA/Texas Christian) almost recorded a triple-double as he added 12 points, eight rebounds, a game-high eight assists and a game-high five steals.  Senior Kamil Svrdlik (Prerov, Czech Republic/Gymnazium Zlin) chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

FDU had one of its best shooting nights of the season as they shot 53.3 percent (32-of-60) from the floor, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from behind-the-arc.  They also recorded 17 assists and only turned the ball over 12 times.

In the first 20 minutes both teams shot lights out as the Knights shot a blistering 58.6 percent (17-of-29) from the floor, while the Pioneers shot 51.7 percent (15-of-29).

The Knights picked up a quick 8-3 lead as Grier and Scott each knocked down back-to-back three's.

With the Knights ahead, 10-8, Svrdlik scored the next eight points for the Knights.  However, Sacred Heart was able to hang around and took its first lead of the game, 19-18, with 10:34 to go in the half.

The game was then tied on seven different occasions over the next five minutes, with the final time being at 31 all.

The Pioneers scored six straight points to take their largest lead of the half, 37-31.  However, the Knights ended the half on a 12-1 run, including the final nine points of the half to go into halftime up 43-38.  Grier's old-fashion three-point play highlighted the run as it gave FDU a 39-38 lead.

The Knights were able to extend their lead to 10 over the first 3:34 of the second half as Scott's layup put the squad ahead, 52-42.

Sacred Heart was able to cut the lead to 54-48, but a Grier trey ball started a 17-5 run that was also capped by a Grier three to give the Knights their largest lead of the game at 71-53 with 8:43 to go.

Over the next four minutes, the Pioneers outscored the Knights, 10-2, to cut the lead to 73-63.  Grier once again came through for the Knights as his third old-fashion three-point play of the game gave FDU a 76-63 lead with 4:18 remaining.

Sacred Heart was not done as they used an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 76-71.  Galvin and Grier then converted back-to-back layups to extend the lead to 80-71 with 1:18 left.

Scott and Galvin combined for five made three throws to help seal the game over the final minute for the Knights as they held on for the big 85-74 victory.

"Terence Grier (Cranford, NJ/St. Thomas More Prep) was incredible tonight," said Head Coach Greg Vetrone.  "He put on a spectacular performance.  John Galvin (Weston, CT/Weston) picked up another double-double.  The team finally stuck together at the end of a game and found a way to win on the road."

Shane Gibson led the Pioneers with 22 points.  Femi Akinpetide added 12 points, while Chris Evans chipped in 10.

The Knights will conclude their season on Saturday when they travel to Hamden, CT to take on Quinnipiac.  The game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. and will be broadcast on MSG.
