The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team scored a 3-0 victory over the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Sunday in Hamden, CT as senior
Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North) broke the school record for career block assists.
The Knights, playing their final road match of the season, run their record to 17-12 (7-8 NEC), as the Bobcats fall to 4-23 (3-11 NEC).
Berkland, who entered the day tied with Lauren Boothby for most block assists in school history with 293, now stands alone atop the list with 296. She joins fellow seniors
Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) and
Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) as members of this year's team who set school career records.
Berkland, Willey and Semler were all instrumental in FDU's dominance on Sunday. Berkland recorded 10 kills and a .692 hitting percentage to go along with three block assists. Willey facilitated the offense with 48 assists, while Semler racked up a team-high 21 digs for the Knights.
The first set was tied nine times before FDU took the lead for good at 12-11 on one of junior
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep)'s match-high 21 kills. The Knights put the set away with a 5-0 run for a 25-18 win.
FDU wasted little time taking the advantage in set number two, jumping out to a 3-0 lead and extending it to 9-3 in the early going. The Knights took their biggest lead of the set at 21-12 on a Quinnipiac attack error. FDU had the final three points of the set to claim a 25-20 win.
The Bobcats had the better of the play in the beginning of the third set and took a 9-7 lead. Before the set got away from the Knights, Head Coach
Stacey Recanati took a timeout. The stop in play favored the Knights as the road team picked up the next seven points for a 14-9 advantage. FDU clung to its lead and won the set by same five-point margin of 25-20.
Sunday was the Knights' second win over Quinnipiac this season. FDU defeated the Bobcats by a 3-1 score on Oct. 8.
The Bobcats were led on offense by Olivia Grattan and Kelby Carey, who picked up nine kills apiece. QU finished with a .164 hitting percentage, while the Knights recorded a .315 hitting percentage.
The Knights will finish up the 2011 regular season schedule with a match against Bryant on Sunday, Nov. 13 at Stratis Arena in Hackensack, NJ. The match will also mark the Knights' Senior Day celebration where Berkland, Willey, Semler and
Meghan Alger (Cheltenham, MD/Bishop McNamara) will be recognized for their dedication to the program.
