W. Volleyball Gets Tripped Up by LIU

The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team could not get by Long Island in Saturday's Northeast Conference match, falling 3-0 in Brooklyn, NY.

The loss drops the Knights to 16-12 (6-8 NEC), while the Blackbirds improve to 18-11 (12-1 NEC). The first-place Blackbirds have now won seven in a row.

In the first set, LIU gained the upper hand at 10-9 and was able to keep the lead throughout en route to a 25-20 win. The Blackbirds finished with a .333 hitting percentage in the first set and a .315 hitting percentage for the match.

The second set was also not kind to the Knights who dug themselves an early 7-2 hole. After facing a double-digit deficit later in the set, FDU trimmed LIU's lead to just four with the score at 20-16. The Blackbirds were able to regain their form and pick up five of the last seven points of the set for a 25-18 win.

The Knights had their most efficient offense in the third with 13 kills and a .268 hitting percentage. The Blackbirds countered with a .342 hitting percentage and a 25-18 win for the straight-set victory.

For the Knights, senior Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North) had two block assists to tie Lauren Boothby's career mark of 293 for the most in program history.

Junior Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) had a team-high nine kills, 10 digs and FDU's lone solo block on the afternoon. Senior Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) recorded 21 assists to lead the offense.

On the other side of the net, Sapphire Reid picked up 11 kills to pace the Blackbirds' offense. LIU's Jessica Rice racked up two solo blocks and three block assists on defense.

The Knights will look to get back in the win column with a 2 p.m. match against Quinnipiac in Hamden, CT.
