The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team will take to the road for the final time this season with a match on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Long Island in Brooklyn, NY at 1 p.m. and a 2 p.m. contest at Quinnipiac in Hamden, CT in Northeast Conference action the following day.
The Knights (16-11, 6-7 NEC) are trying to carry over the momentum from Wednesday's 3-2 road win over St. Francis NY.
Against the Terriers, junior
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) made her mark on offense (26 kills) and defense (14 digs) in leading the Knights to a win. Senior
Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North) and freshman
Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach ) also recorded double-digit kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Senior
Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) helped the offense with 47 assists and five aces.
First up this weekend is the Long Island Blackbirds (17-11, 11-1 NEC), a team that has won 12 of its last 13 matches and six in a row. One of those wins was a 3-0 decision over FDU on Oct. 26 in Hackensack, NJ. In the matchup, the Knights struggled with their offense with 20 attack errors to 19 kills for a -.011 hitting percentage.
LIU swept the NEC awards this week with Hanna Gibeau taking home Molten/NEC Player of the Week, Vera Djuric picking up Molten/NEC Rookie of the Week and Jessica Rice winning Molten/NEC Defensive Player of the Week.
Quinnipiac (4-21, 3-9 NEC) is coming off a two-loss weekend, having fallen to Bryant and Central Connecticut State at home.
FDU had no problem getting by the Bobcats when the two teams played on Oct. 8 at Stratis Arena in Hackensack, NJ. The Knights earned a 3-1 victory thanks to double-digit kills from Wheeler (18), Berkland (11) and Braga (12).
Before playing the Knights, the Bobcats have a Friday night showdown scheduled with second-place Sacred Heart.
FDU has put together an 8-4 record in away matches this season.
On the record-watch front, Berkland is two block assists away from tying Lauren Boothby's school record of 293 career block assists. Wheeler is also approaching a couple of Boothby's records. The junior outside hitter is 36 kills away from tying Boothby's single-season record of 513. She is also 200 shy of Boothby's mark of 1,506 career kills, which is also first in school history.
Following this weekend, the Knights will wrap up their regular season schedule at home versus Bryant on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m.
