W. Bowling Sits in Second After First Northeast Conference Meet

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's bowling team finished the first Northeast Conference meet of the season with a 6-3 record.  The Knights went 3-1 on day two and currently hold a 28-8 record on the season.

The 6-3 record has the Knights tied for second place in the NEC.  Host Sacred Heart University holds an 8-1 record, with their only loss to FDU, while New Jersey City University is tied with FDU for second.

The Knights took on New Jersey City University in the first traditional team game of the day at Brunswick Colony Lanes in Wallingford, CT.  FDU took the win in game one, 1,026 to 906.  Senior Joely Carrillo (Clifton, NJ/Paramus Catholic) and junior Danielle McEwan (Stony Point, NY/Stony Point) led the Knights, each with a score of 222.  Freshman Erica Schneider (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue High School) recorded a 216 for FDU.

In match two FDU took on St. Francis NY.  Senior Meghan Kelly (Howell, NJ/Howell) recorded the team-high with a score of 235, while McEwan kept her streak of 200+ games alive with a 208.  The Knights took the win, 986-803.

Saint Peter's handed the Knights their only loss of the day.  After being 80 pins behind in the fifth frame, FDU battled back.  The Peahens took the victory but by just 12 pins, 912-900.  Sophomore Michelle Hunzaker (Cary, NC/Green Hope High School) led the team with a 216, while Kelly aided in the Knights total with a 209.

In the final match of NEC Meet 1 the Knights faced Long Island University.  FDU compiled a total team score of 1,014 with help from the team's seniors.  Kelly shot a 233, while Carrillo added a 216.  Schneider added a 213 to outlast the Blackbirds, who scored 830.

After Northeast Conference Meet 1, Sacred Heart leads the conference standings with an 8-1 record.  NJCU and FDU sit in second place with 6-3 records, while Monmouth holds fourth place with a 5-4 record.  Adelphi, Saint Francis PA, St. Francis NY and Saint Peters all are tied with a 4-5 record.  NEC preseason favorite, Kutztown, sits in ninth place with a 3-6 record and Long Island University rounds out the standings with a 1-8 record.

“We were far more consistent today and it showed in our scores,” said Head Coach Mike LoPresti.  “We executed our game plan well and performed much better than on Saturday.”

“Overall, I am not disappointed, because of the high level of competition among the Northeast Conference,” added LoPresti.

Carrillo led the Knights with a total pinfall of 1,798 to finished fourth among the competition.  She compiled an average of 199.7.  McEwan finished fifth among the field with a pinfall of 1,790 and an average of 198.8.

Kelly was another solid player for the Knights throughout the weekend.  In four games Kelly compiled a pinfall of 862 for a 215.5 average.  Schneider also had an impressive weekend for FDU.  In three games she compiled a pinfall of 604 for an average of 201.3.

“Erica struggled yesterday but had a fantastic day today,” noted LoPresti.  “She played a style she hasn't had to play before and did very well.  “It is very impressive to see such versatility in her young career.”

The Knights return to action next weekend at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Classic.
