The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team will conclude the 2011 campaign and honor its four seniors at Sunday's Northeast Conference match against Bryant at 3 p.m. at Stratis Arena in Hackensack, NJ.
Before the match, the Knights (17-12, 7-8 NEC) will celebrate seniors
Sarah Berkland (Newton, MA/Newton North),
Meghan Alger (Cheltenham, MD/Bishop McNamara),
Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) and
Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) for their commitment to the volleyball program.
Berkland broke FDU's career block assists record on Nov. 6 against Quinnipiac. The Newton, MA native has 296 in her career and finished with the third most in single-season history with 97 as a junior.
Alger has amassed 352 kills for the Burgundy and Blue. This season, she has stepped her game up by setting personal season bests in kills (146), aces (17), digs (42), solo blocks (12) and block assists (67).
Semler, out of Allentown Central Catholic, has put together the top three marks in school history for single-season digs . She broke the program's single-season record with 577 as a junior. Semler attained the school record for career digs on Sept. 9 against Norfolk State and now has 2,032 in her four-year career.
Willey's name appears three times on FDU's list of most assists in a single-season, highlighted by 1,091 assists in 2010, good for second most in school history. The Bel Air product sits atop the list of career assists with 3,372.
Bryant (13-18) and FDU enter Sunday's contest with matching 7-8 NEC records. The winner will finish in fifth place in the NEC and one spot out of the four-team tournament.
The last time the two teams met, the Knights defeated the Bulldogs by a 3-1 margin on Oct. 16 in Smithfield, RI. Junior
Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) had 26 kills to lead the offense and added eight digs on defense. Willey dished out 48 assists, Semler recorded 26 digs and Berkland had four block assists in the match.
The Knights are coming off a 3-0 win over Quinnipiac on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Stratis Arena where they put together a .315 hitting percentage as a team. FDU is 5-4 in home matches this season, while Bryant is two games below .500 with a 5-7 record in away matches.
The Bulldogs are fresh off a 3-0 loss to LIU on Saturday in Brooklyn, NY. Bryant has four players with 200 kills or more this season and one, in Jazmin Stoner, who has 336 on the season.
For the Knights, with 507 kills, Wheeler is just six kills away from tying the school record for single-season kills. The mark is currently held by Lauren Boothby, who recorded 513 in 2008.
