The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, by Mount St. Mary's University on Sunday, Oct. 9 in Teaneck, NJ. With the loss the Knights fall to 4-7-1 (1-4 NEC), while The Mount improve to 4-6-2 (2-2 NEC).
After maintaining a 1-1 tie through the first half, The Mount overcame the home team with a second half goal.
The Knights began the game with several offensive opportunities, including three shots in the opening five minutes. In the 13th minute freshman Alexis Tirelli fed the ball to senior Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial) at the top of the penalty box. Sherman drilled a shot that was saved by MSM goal keeper, Alicia Miller.
Three minutes later, freshman Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) crossed the ball from the right end line to where Sherman was positioned in the six-yard box. Sherman put the ball past Miller to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. The goal was Sherman's third of the season.
The Mount responded immediately with a counter attack down the right touch line. Jackie Corley crossed the ball to Sadie Winship who was positioned at the far post. Winship evened the score with a shot to the lower left corner.
FDU and The Mount traded shots in the final minutes of play but went into the break with a 1-1 draw.
Mount St. Mary's came out strong in the second half, producing a shot that was blocked by the FDU defense and a shot that went wide less than three minutes into the half.
In the 51st minute, Corley dribbled into the penalty box before shifting to the right side. Corley ripped a hard shot past FDU keeper, Stephanie Tanzi (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West), which landed in the upper corner of the far side of the goal. Corley's second goal of the season put The Mount up 2-1.
The Mount created a continuous stream of force on the FDU backline with seven shots in the following eight minutes, including two shots that challenged Tanzi.
In the 66th minute senior Lisa-Marie Curti (Richmond Hill, Ontario/St. Theresa of Lisieux) started the Knights on an offensive surge with a shot that went just wide. With help from a run by Lindzy Williams (Washington Township, N.J./Westwood) and a pair of shots each from Sherman and Curti, the Knights sustained pressure on the MSM defensive until the final whistle was blown.
The Knights recorded 15 shots with eight on goal and forced Miller to make seven saves. The Mount took 17 shots and placed six on goal.
Tanzi made four saves in 90 minutes of play. Her record falls to 0-4-0 this season.
The Knights travel to Fairfield, CT on Friday, Oct. 14 to take on Sacred Heart. Kickoff at Campus Field is slated for 4:00 pm.
