W. Soccer Drops 5-0 Loss to Wagner

Box Score

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team dropped a 5-0 decision to Wagner on Friday, Oct. 7 in Staten Island, NY.  With the loss the Knights fall to 4-6-1 on the season with a 1-3 record in the Northeast Conference.  The Seahawks improve to 8-3-2 (2-2 NEC).

The Knights began the game with a strong offensive attack.  NEC Rookie of the Week, Alexa Tirelli (Slate Hill, NY/Minisink Valley) took a shot that went wide just one minute in to the game.  Tirelli's shot was followed by two shots from senior Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial), an FDU corner kick and a shot by senior Stephanie Austin (Canonsburg, PA/Canon McMillan), all within the first ten minutes of play.

The Seahawks were awarded a corner kick in the 17th minute.  After the Knights cleared the corner, Julie Vigliotti passed the ball back into Wagner scoring territory.  The through ball split the Knights' backline and was put into the lower left corner of the net by Jackie Nicholas to give Wagner a 1-0 lead.

Wagner continued to challenge Stephanie Tanzi (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) in the net with three shots in the next 15 minutes.  In the 32nd a minute a loose ball in the box gave Alyssa Grecco a chance to score.  Grecco shot past Tanzi to put Wagner up 2-0.

After the break the Knights were back in offensive action.  FDU recorded 6 shots by five different players in the opening ten minutes, including a shot by Tirelli that hit the post.  However, the Knights were unable to cut the deficit.

A Wagner corner kick in the 73rd minute enabled Monica Zurich to find the back of the net on a header.  Vigliotti added the Seahawk's fourth goal just three minutes later by capitalizing on a rebounded post shot.

Zurich added her second goal of the game in the 77th minute after a give-and-go play from Alyssa Azzinaro.

Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Alexis Pardo (Valhalla, NY/Westlake) added shots for the Knights in the final minutes, but they could not add enough offense in time.

Tanzi recorded seven saves and picked up her third loss of the season.  The Knights tallied 16 shots with ten shots on goal.

FDU takes a quick break before resuming Northeast Conference play on Sunday, Oct. 9.  The Knights will host Mount St. Mary's at University Stadium at 1:00 pm.
