W. Volleyball Looks Ahead to Crucial Weekend of NEC Play

The Fairleigh Dickinson women's volleyball team enters this weekend's action with a chance for the team's first six-match winning streak since 1989.

The Knights (13-6, 3-2 NEC), winners of their last four matches, will take on Central Connecticut State on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. in New Britain, CT, before heading to Smithfield, RI on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against Bryant.

The Knights improved to fifth place in the Northeast Conference with their wins over Quinnipiac on Saturday and St. Francis NY on Wednesday.

On their current four-match winning streak, senior Sarah Willey (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) has averaged 34.75 assists. The Bel Air product has 3,081 assists in her career and is 104 away from tying Ruth Levy's school record of 3,185.

Their last time out, FDU earned a straight-set home win over St. Francis NY. Junior Meaghan Wheeler (Chatsworth, CA/Chaminade College Prep) paced the offense with 15 kills, and senior Kelsey Semler (Allentown, PA/Allentown Central Catholic), sophomore Taylor Roland-Buohl (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and freshman Chelsea Braga (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach ) all recorded double-digit digs.

Saturday will be the second time the Knights have played the Blue Devils in 2011.  The two teams squared off on Aug. 27 in Boston, MA at the Beanpot Classic where FDU suffered a 3-0 loss. CCSU won the sets by scores of 25-9, 25-22 and 25-15.

Wheeler had a double-double with 11 kills and 15 digs in the loss. Willey dished 21 assists and Semler had 13 digs, but the Knights could not overcome a -.061 hitting percentage.

The Blue Devils, on the other hand, hit .204 as a team in the late August meeting with 12 kills from Emily Cochran.

CCSU has had nearly a week to prepare since their last match on Sunday, Oct. 9. Over the weekend, the Blue Devils made the trip out to Western Pennsylvania where they defeated Saint Francis PA and Robert Morris. CCSU's Sara DeLacey, who leads the NEC with a .362 hitting percentage, earned Molton/NEC Player of the Week honors on Monday.

The Knights will also have to deal with a Bryant team (9-13, 3-4 NEC) that they lost to by a 3-0 score last year in Smithfield. FDU was able to avenge the loss later in the season with a 3-2 win at Stratis Arena.

The Bulldogs, currently sitting in sixth place in the NEC, had won three matches in a row before dropping a 3-2 decision on Sunday to Saint Francis PA. The Knights had no problem with Saint Francis PA, beating the Red Flash, 3-0, earlier in the season.

Jazmin Stoner leads the Bulldogs' offense with 249 kills on the season, while four other players have surpassed the 100-kills plateau.

On defense, Bryant's Maria Scocca ranks third in the NEC with an average of 1.05 blocks per set.

Since the 2008 season, FDU has had the better of the play versus the Bulldogs, putting together a 4-2 record over that stretch.

Following the weekend slate, the Knights will return home for five matches in a row at Stratis Arena. The homestand will begin on Saturday, Oct. 22, with a 1 p.m. rematch with Robert Morris.
