W. Soccer Drops 4-1 Decision to Sacred Heart

Box Score

The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Sacred Heart University on Friday, Oct. 14 in Fairfield, CT.  With the loss the Knights fall to 4-8-1 on the season with a 1-5 mark in the Northeast Conference, while Sacred Heart improves to 7-4-3 with a 3-2 mark in NEC play.

The Pioneers scored four second-half goals to edge the Knights at Campus Stadium.

The Knights held SHU scoreless through the first half but allowed nine shots, including five on goal.

Stephanie Tanzi (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) was challenged in goal on five occasions.  She made several leaping saves that prevented SHU from taking the lead.  In the 33rd minute Tanzi was pressured hard in front of the net.  A shot from Lucy Gildein was saved with a diving stop by Tanzi but the ball came loose in the six-yard box.  Freshman Kasey Schiavoni (West Chester, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) blocked the Pioneer's chance near the right post to eliminate SHU's scoring opportunity.

The Knights' lone shot on goal in the first 45 minutes was produced by sophomore Elizabeth Langer (Clinton, N.J./Voorhees) in the 26th minute.

Three minutes into the second half Sacred Heart was awarded a free kick from 25 yards out. Jen Mulvey headed the ball into the goal to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.  Alyssa Brandofino earned the assist.

Six minutes later SHU added to their lead when Lauren Boccio headed in a goal off a corner kick.  The Pioneers turned their advantage into a 3-0 lead in the 56th minute when a free kick was awarded from 30 yards outside the goal.  Boccio took a shot that went past Tanzi after Amanda Stiles' shot from the free kick rebounded off Tanzi's save.

After ten minutes of strong play in the midfield the Pioneers scored their final goal of the day.

In the 79th minute senior Amy Flanagan (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) took a free kick for the Knights from 55 yards out.  Flanagan's kick was bobbled by the SHU keeper and landed in the goal to put the Knights on the scoreboard.

FDU was outshot 5-20 in 90 minutes of play.  Tanzi earned the loss with four goals against and nine saves.  Senior Rashidah Sherman (Pelham Manor, NY/Pelham Memorial) led the Knights with two shots.

The Knights resume NEC action on Sunday, Oct. 16 with a home contest against Bryant.  Kickoff is slated for noon.
