Baseball Loses to Sacred Heart at Home, 15-2

The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped game one of a four-game series versus NEC-foe Sacred Heart Friday afternoon, 15-2, at FDU Field in Teaneck.  The Pioneers improve to 19-20 (10-7 NEC) on the season, while the Knights fall to 9-28 (4-13 NEC) overall.

The Pioneers scored five times in the top of the first to take an early 5-0 lead.  Steve Tedesco knocked a two-run homer to left-center field before Hunter Phillips drilled a two-run single off the fence for the two big hits of the inning.

The Knights cut the lead to 5-1 as junior Joe Martino (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) hit the first pitch in the bottom of the second over the right-center field fence for his fifth home run of the season.

Three straight singles by the Knights to start the third loaded the bases before Junior DJ Robinson (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) drove home sophomore Matt Holsman (Coral Springs, FL/Stoneman Douglas) with an RBI sacrifice fly to left.

In the top half of the fourth, John Murphy's sacrifice fly put the Pioneers back up four at 6-2.

Sacred Heart extended the lead to 11-2 with a five-run sixth.  The big blow of the inning was a grand slam off the bat of Murphy to center field.

The Pioneers tacked on two more runs in both the seventh and the eighth to extend their lead to the final outcome of 15-2.

Senior Mike Strachman (2-6) suffered the loss on the hill for the Knights.  He gave up nine runs, eight earned on 11 hits in 5.0 innings.  Junior Spencer Kelly (Rockville, MD/The Bullis School) and senior Corey Jeffers (Woodbine, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) pitched the final four innings, with Jeffers throwing the final three.

Chris Zaccherio earned the victory on the hill for Sacred Heart.  He went 8.0 innings, allowing two runs, both earned on nine hits.  He walked three and stuck out 10.

Junior Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) and Martino each had two hits for the Knights, who had a total of 10 as a team.  Mike Drowne had three hits for the Pioneers, who as a team collected 18 hits.  Murphy had five RBI's, and Tedesco added four RBI's.

The two teams return to action tomorrow afternoon at FDU Field in Teaneck for a doubleheader featuring two seven inning contests.  First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
