The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team crushed NJIT Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference road game in Newark, NJ, 14-2. Junior DJ Robinson (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had his best game as a Knight as he went 4-for-6 with a career-high seven RBI's, two runs scored and a stolen base. The Knights pounded out 17 hits and took advantage of three Highlanders' errors. Despite some control problems, senior Terry Lydecker (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) (1-0) shut NJIT down on the hill to earn his first victory of the season. The southpaw pitched 6.0 strong innings, scattering eight hits and yielding two runs, both earned. He walked six and struck out three. Junior Chris Theordor (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) pitched the final 3.0 innings to shut the door on the Highlanders. With the victory, the Knights improve to 9-22 on the season, while the Highlanders fall to 9-24 overall.
The Knights took an early 1-0 in the top of the first when Robinson singled up the middle to drive home fellow classmate Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary). However, NJIT knotted the game at one in the bottom of the second on Matt Tomzcyk's RBI single.
After the first two men of the inning were retired in the third, the Knights plated three runs to go up 4-1. LaForge reached on an error and advanced to third on junior Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney)'s double. Robinson then came through with a big two-out single to score both runners. Two batters later, sophomore Ryan Kresky (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) doubled to right-center to drive home Robinson.
The scoring for the Knights was not finished in the fourth as they scored four more times to go up 8-1. Sophomore Eric Pollag scored on an error committed by the Highlanders' catcher. Freshman Jonathan Torres (Miramar, FL/Pine Crest) scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch. Later on in the inning, Robinson came through with his third RBI single of the day to plate LaForge. Junior Joe Martino (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke) capped the scoring by driving home Dillon with an RBI sacrifice fly to left field.
The Highlanders cut the Knights' lead to 8-2 in the sixth on Tomzcyk's second RBI single of the game. The Knights put the game away in the seventh as they scored six more times to go up 14-2. Once again, Robinson delivered the big blow of the inning as he stroked a bases-loaded double to left-center to score sophomore Matt Holsman (Coral Springs, FL/Stoneman Douglas), LaForge and Dillon. Before Robinson's big hit, Holsman delivered a two-run single to score sophomore Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and Pollag. That was all the Knights would need as they took the victory, 14-2.
Besides Robinson, LaForge also collected four hits and scored four times. Pollag added three hits and two runs scored. Dillon also scored three times.
Steven Ace took the loss on the hill for NJIT. Tomzyck went 3-for-4 and drove in both runs for the Highlanders, who collected 11 hits as a team.
The Knights return to action this Friday as they travel to Smithfield, RI to take on Bryant in the first of four games in a key Northeast Conference series. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
