The Fairleigh Dickinson baseball team dropped the final game of a four-game Series afternoon to Wagner, 14-4, Sunday afternoon at FDU Field in Teaneck. The Knights took an early 3-0 before the Seahawks exploded for three runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to take an 8-3 lead. With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 12-13 (8-4 NEC) on the season, while the Knights fall to 5-20 (4-8 NEC) overall.
The Knights jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on RBI singles by junior Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) and sophomore Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), scoring sophomore Ryan Kresky (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) and junior Joe Martino (Westbury, NY/W.T. Clarke).
With one out in the third, Kresky hit a deep home run to straight away center field to put the Knights up, 3-0. It was Kresky's second home run on the season.
Wagner scored three times in the third to tie the game at three. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Tommy Higgins as he drilled a two-run double.
The Seahawks then took the lead for good in the fifth as they scored five times to take an 8-3 lead. Kevin McDonnell had a two-run single, and Seth Boyd hit a three-run homer to center.
The Knights cut the lead to 8-4 in the bottom half of the inning as Kresky scored on LaForge's RBI single.
Wagner answered with a run in the sixth and put the game away with two more runs in the eighth and three more in the ninth to earn the 14-4 victory.
Freshman Matt Cadigan (Freehold, N.J./Freehold) (0-3) took the loss on the hill for the Knights. He went 7.0 innings, scattering ten hits and allowing nine runs with eight of them being earned. He walked one and struck out one. Junior Chris Theordor (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) and senior Terry Lydecker (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) each pitched an inning to close the game out.
Dale Hering earned the victory for Wagner. He went 5.0 innings, giving up four runs, all earned on five hits. He walked four and struck out four. The Seahawks bullpen limited the Knights to one hit over the final four innings.
The Knights only collected six hits on the day and committed three errors in the field. LaForge and Eliasen each went 2-for-4 to lead the Knights. Along with the home run, Kresky scored three times, and LaForge drove in two runs.
Boyd had a big day for the Seahawks as he went 5-for-5 with a home run, four RBI's and two runs scored. Gaby Ramirez went 4-for-5 with a home run, three RBI's and scored three times. Brian Martutartus added three hits, and Higgins scored three times. Wagner collected 16 hits off Knights' pitching and did not commit an error.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, April 14 as they host Saint Peter's in a non-conference match-up at FDU Field in Teaneck. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
