The Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team lost to Manhattan, 8-0, and Colgate, 11-1, on Friday at the Rebel Spring Games, held in Kissimmee, FL.
The Knights were shutout in the first game against the Jaspers, 8-0. Manhattan started the scoring early, putting six runs up in the top of the first inning and adding one in the second and one in the third. Trina Fields (Norridge, IL/Ridgewood) started the game for the Knights on the mound and FDU received relief pitching from Kara Boyd (Alexandria, PA/Juniata Valley) and Maire Shaughnessy (Culpeper, Va./Highland).
Brianne Benedict (Alliance, OH/West Branch), Mikayla Fernandez (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) and Kirsten Shreve (Kent, WA/Kentwood) each went 1-for-2 to account for FDU's three hits.
In the second game of the day, Fairleigh Dickinson fell, 11-1, to Colgate, who put up eight runs in the first inning to take a big lead.
Shreve scored the Knights' lone run after getting hit by a pitch to give FDU a base runner. She moved over on a sacrifice bunt and advanced on a passed ball. Kristen Coughlan (Mount Royal, NJ/Kingsway) pushed her across the plate to put the Knights on the board.
Shreve was on the mound for the Knights and Shaughnessy again came in to pitch in the later innings.
"It's been a tough couple of days, but we are hoping that tomorrow's games are better," said Head Coach Dale Martin. "Defensively, we have to start stepping up and executing. We are putting too much pressure on our pitching, which isn't hitting spots either and the combination is why we are losing. We need to we need to pick up both our hitting and our defense."
The Knights conclude competition at the Rebel Spring Games on March 20 with games against Brown at 11:00 a.m. and Army at 1:00 p.m.
