The Fairleigh Dickinson University women's basketball team fell to Princeton in its season opener, 78-37, at the Jadwin Gym in Princeton, NJ on Saturday, November 13. With the loss, the Knights fall to 0-1 on the season while the Tigers advance to 1-0.
Princeton Junior Devona Allgood scored the first points of the game off the opening-tip. FDU Junior Mariyah Laury (Orange, NJ/Orange) responded quickly with two-points within the first minute of the game. The Tiger's senior captain, Addie Micir, led Princeton with a trio of three-pointers in the first five minutes of the game to give PU an early lead.
On FDU's side the action was all Laury and Junior Esther Wallace (Springfield, MA/Springfield Central) in the first half. Laury added six points while Wallace put up eight for the Knights. Princeton's Niveen Rasheed capitalized four-free throws and Allgood followed with 10 points putting the Tigers on top at the half, 39-20.
To begin the second half, Princeton went on a 17 point run, leaving the Knights down 56-20 at the 15-minute mark. A three from sophomore Alannah Driscoll-Sbar (Northampton, MA/Northampton) gave the Knights a spark at the 13-minute mark. Driscoll-Sbar's shot was followed with two layups from Wallace and two made free-throws from Junior Erica McKeithan (Newport News, VA/Heritage).
The Tigers heavy offense ran away with the lead, leaving FDU with a final score of 78-37. The Knights were lead by Wallace who had 13 points and six rebounds. Laury notched six points and five rebounds, while Jasmyra Saunders (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Catholic) had five points and six rebounds.
"Princeton is a very good team," commended Head Coach Pete Cinella. "We did a good job getting the ball inside, and our post players stepped up with strong moves."
"We have to get ready for Columbia," Cinella added of the Knights next match-up. FDU continue its season on November 16 when they travel to Manhattan to take on The Columbia University Lions . Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
