Men's Basketball Uses Big Second Half to Win at Bryant, 67-55

The Fairleigh Dickinson University men's basketball team used strong second-half shooting to overcome host Byrant, 67-55, at Chace Center in Smithfield, RI on Thursday evening. The Knights improve to 5-4 in the Northeast Conference and 6-15 overall, while the Bulldogs fall to 0-21 on the season, including a 0-9 mark in league play.

Terence Grier (Cranford, NJ/St. Thomas More Prep) matched his season-high with 20 points, connecting on 8-of-10 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from three-point range, and grabbing seven rebounds. Sean Baptiste (North Brunswick, NJ/St. Josephs of Metuchen) also netted 20 points and grabbed seven boards. Alvin Mofunanya (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) had 10 points and six rebounds and John Galvin (Weston, CT/Weston) pulled down six boards, finishing with six points after a 4-for-5 performance from the line. Mike Scott (Philadelphia, PA/Texas Christian) dished out nine assists and had seven points.

The Knights shot 56 percent in the final 20 minutes to finish the game shooting 51.2 percent and the defense held Bryant to 27 percent shooting in the final frame to finish the game at 35 percent.

Over the first three minutes of the game, the Knights took a 7-0 lead, as the first points on the board were a dunk by Grier on an alley-oop pass from Scott before Baptiste scored five-straight.

Bryant staged a run, capped by a three-pointer from Chris Birrell, to make it a one-point game, 13-12, with less than 13 minutes remaining in the half. But Baptiste and Grier sank back-to-back three-pointers to widen the gap.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Grier with just under seven minutes left in the first period gave FDU a 22-17 lead.

But the Bulldogs staged a 7-2 run to tie up the game, 24-24, getting back-to-back baskets from Raphael Jordan. Bryant took its first lead of the game, 27-26, on a jumper in the paint from Papa Lo with 1:42 remaining in the half, but Galvin converted a three-point play after grabbing the offensive rebound to send FDU into the locker room with a 29-27 advantage.

Grier and Baptiste each had 10 points to lead all scorers in the first 20 minutes. Scott dished out six assists and Grier had four rebounds and shot 4-for-5 in the first frame. The Knights held a 14-11 edge on the boards and the two teams were almost evenly matched in shooting percent (FDU 48 percent, Bryant 47.8 percent).

Bryant took the lead out of the half, but it returned to Fairleigh Dickinson on a jumper by DeShawn Dockery (Chicago, IL/Worcester Academy). The two teams traded baskets and leads over the next six minutes, until the Knights staged a 10-0 run on the strength of five points apiece from Baptiste and Grier, grabbing hold of a 46-38 advantage.

The Knights came out strong after the break, shooting 64 percent from the floor over the first 9:13 of the second half, while holding Bryant to 25 percent in the first 16 minutes of the second half.

Baptiste's three with six minutes remaining in the game gave FDU its first double-digit advantage, 53-43. Birrell connected on a long three-pointer to cut the Knights' edge to 58-52 with 1:14 on the clock, but Fairleigh Dickinson connected on 9-of-12 from the charity stripe in the last 1:10 for the 67-55 win.

Fairleigh Dickinson held a slight edge on the boards, 35-33, but Bryant held a 12-6 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Barry Latham led the Bulldogs with 16 points, while Birrell had 12 points and Vlad Kondratyev added 11.

"Tonight's win was a great team effort," said Head Coach Greg Vetrone. "We haven't won a road game all year and hopefully this will give us confidence moving forward. Mike Scott (Philadelphia, PA/Texas Christian) picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and DeShawn Dockery (Chicago, IL/Worcester Academy) came in to run the point for 10 minutes. He ran the show, not missing a beat and helping us extend the lead and that was crucial."

"The team is starting to find some chemistry," said Vetrone. "Terence [Grier] had a phenomenal game and Sean [Baptiste] and John [Galvin] both came up big."

The Knights are back in action at Central Connecticut State on Saturday, January 30 at 1:00 p.m.
