Baseball Defeated Wednesday at Rutgers, 10-2

The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team was upended by home-standing Rutgers University, 10-2, Wednesday, May 6 at Bainton Field in Piscataway, NJ.  The Knights fell to 12-30 overall, despite a three-hit afternoon courtesy of senior outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic).

Amongst 15 hits, FDU left 11 men on base.  Meanwhile, the Scarlet Knights (19-28) swatted 15 hits.

Rutgers slapped a three-spot on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second inning.  Back-to-back-to-back walks juiced the bases with no outs, followed by a two-run single by junior catcher Billy Reilly.

Four hits in five trips to the dish by Fairleigh Dickinson ushered in the fourth frame.  Infielder Mike Eliasen (Swedesboro, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) accounted for the third effort, as the freshman's lace to left field plated a run.  Sophomore outfielder Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) followed suit with an RBI single, slicing the deficit to 3-2.

In the fifth, sophomore outfielder Michael Lang's triple resulted in three runs scoring, as RU opened up a 6-2 advantage.  They added another in the sixth.  Two hits and a walk equated into the third three-run inning of the day by Rutgers in the seventh inning.

Freshman right-hander Ben Durgan (Boyton Beach, FL/North Broward Prep) took the loss, hurling 1.0 inning as FDU's starter.  Rutgers' senior righty Tony Wargo came from the bullpen to work 3.2 innings to improve to 5-1 on the season.

The Knights received multi-hit showings from red-shirt junior first baseman Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay), freshman infielder Ryan Kresky (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) and Eliasen, in addition to Maher.

Freshman right-hander Ray Courtney (Bronx, NY/Bronx Science) and junior southpaw Terry Lydecker (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) registered scoreless relief appearances.

Fairleigh Dickinson hosts Long Island University at 3:00 p.m., Friday, May 8 in Teaneck, NJ.  The four-game Northeast Conference set marks the Knights' final home appearance of the year.
