The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team was downed, 14-8, Sunday, May 3 versus Central Connecticut State University. Seven runs over the first two frames sunk the Knights, as FDU fell to 12-29 overall and 7-13 versus Northeast Conference foes.
FDU staked freshman starter Jonathan Scott (Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) four runs in the top of the first frame. However, six earned runs through 1.0 inning of work chased the right-hander from the hill. Scott took the loss, while CCSU senior southpaw Derek Roberts battled through 6.0 innings, striking out seven, to notch the victory.
Red-shirt junior first baseman Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) deposited a two-run triple into the right-centerfield gap to open the afternoon's scoring. Sophomore outfielder Brian Dillon (Sarasota, FL/Cardinal Mooney) plated Sand with a two-bagger down the right field line and later scored on a wild pitch.
By the end of one inning, the Blue Devils (22-15 overall, 12-7 NEC) sliced their hole to 4-3. Amidst a five-hit frame, three players stroked RBI singles. Their ensuing at-bat, Central Connecticut rapped another five hits to jump ahead, 7-4.
In the sixth, Dillon cut into a 9-4 hole with an RBI-single to centerfield. Sophomore pinch hitter Erik Pollag (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) went for an RBI base knock in the seventh and Sand hit into a fielder's choice, en route to making the margin 9-7. However, after two quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, CCSU sophomore designated hitter Patt Epps poked a two-run single through the right side, backed by an RBI base hit courtesy of senior outfielder Jay Schillaci.
Senior outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) brought it to 12-8 following an eighth inning sacrifice fly, but Central Connecticut answered with two more runs.
Sophomore Chris Theordor (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) contributed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for the Knights. Maher tallied multiple hits, as did the first four batters in the order (Maher, freshman infielder Matt Holsman (Coral Springs, FL/Stoneman Douglas), Sand, and Dillon). That quartet accounted for eight of Fairleigh Dickinson's nine hits.
All but one student-athlete in the starting line-up registered a hit for CCSU, with seven Blue Devils posting multi-hit efforts.
FDU heads to Rutgers University at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 6.
