The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team fell, 5-1, to visiting Stony Brook University, Thursday, April 23 in Teaneck, NJ. The Knights slipped to 9-23 overall with sophomore first baseman Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) (Garfield, NJ) recording the squad's lone RBI.
Stony Brook (18-16) was led by senior outfielder Michael Tansey's (Valley Stream, NY) three hits and sophomore catcher Nick Thode's (Huntington Station, NY) two RBI.
FDU freshman righty Jonathan Scott (Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) (Northvale, NJ) started, worked 2.0 hitless innings, and retired all six batters he faced. In the third inning, Thode sent a fly into the jet stream, and SBU went up 1-0 following the subsequent dinger. Things stood at 2-0 in favor of the visitors by the end of the frame and moved to 4-0 after the top of the fourth.
An RBI groundout courtesy of Thode extended the margin to 5-0 in the sixth inning. The Knights got on the board after loading the bases with two outs in the seventh. LaForge stroked a base hit to centerfield, making it a 5-1 deficit.
Freshman righty Ben Durgan (Boyton Beach, FL/North Broward Prep) (Boyton Beach, FL) was saddled with the loss, tossing 2.0 innings. Conversely, right-hander Evan Stecko-Haley got the win for the Seawolves. The sophomore threw 2.0 innings ? one of six student-athletes combining to hurl 8.0 frames of shutout ball.
A trio of Knights registered scoreless appearances out of the bullpen: freshman right-hander Ray Courtney (Bronx, NY/Bronx Science) (Bronx, NY), senior righty Ryan Hennessy (Mahopac, NY/Trinity Pawling) (Mahopac, NY), and sophomore righty Chris Theordor (Staten Island, NY/Staten Island Tech) (Staten Island, NY).
Senior outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) (Peekskill, NY), red-shirt junior first baseman Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) (San Diego, CA), and sophomore catcher Erik Pollag (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) (Sicklerville, NJ) all both aboard twice via one hit and a walk, respectively
