Knights' Nine Downed at Manhattan, 8-1

The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team lost, 8-1, versus home-standing Manhattan College, Wednesday, April 15 at Van Cortlandt Park in Riverdale, NY.  The Knights fell to 9-18 overall, despite a three-hit effort by freshman infielder Matt Holsman (Coral Springs, FL/Stoneman Douglas).

An infield single to the pitcher afforded the Jaspers (21-10) a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the fourth frame.  Manhattan used a seven-run rally to push it to 8-0 the next inning, following a lead-off solo home run courtesy of sophomore outfielder Mark Onorati and a one-out run scored via a wild pitch.  Senior catcher mark Russell and Onorati capped things with a tandem of two-RBI base hits.

Holsman drove in FDU's lone run with an RBI two-bagger in the top of the ninth inning.

Freshman right-hander Jonathan Scott (Northvale, NJ/Northern Valley Old Tappan) got the starting nod and hurled 4.2 innings, sitting down five.  Manhattan junior righty Zac Goyer countered with 6.0 innings of work, striking out six and scattering two hits.  Scott suffered his second loss of the season, while Goyer improved to 3-2.  Jaspers' freshman righty Rob LaColla added 2.0 scoreless innings of relief.

Three Knights' right-handers tossed scoreless innings of relief: freshman John Schmidt (East Islip, NY/East Islip), junior Corey Jeffers (Woodbine, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), and freshman Ben Durgan (Boyton Beach, FL/North Broward Prep).

Holsman got aboard four times on the afternoon.  Senior Vincent Pennacchio (Huntington Station, NY/Commack) added a pinch hit single.  Three Jaspers collected multi-hit showings, with Onorati and Russell contributing three RBI's each.

Manhattan has not lost at home this season and extended its home winning streak to 17 games.

Fairleigh Dickinson heads to Emmitsburg, MD for a four-game Northeast Conference series with Mount St. Mary's University. The nine-inning opener is slated for 3:30 p.m., Friday, April 17.
