The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team (0-3) took on home-standing George Washington University, Saturday, March 8 in a doubleheader at Barcroft Park in Arlington, VA. FDU fell twice, 13-1 and 4-0.
In the opener, ten runs over three frames resulted in a 13-1 setback for Head Coach Jerry DeFabbia's team.
Junior outfielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) recorded a tandem of hits, while freshman right-hander John Schmidt (East Islip, NY/East Islip) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
FDU took an early 1-0 lead, despite having two outs. Senior outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) walked and proceeded to swipe second base. Two batters later, red-shirt designated hitter Mark Morton (Coral Springs, FL/Grandview Prep) roped a single into centerfield to plate Maher.
The Colonials' (5-6) first hit of the afternoon in the bottom of the third tied the ball game, as red-shirt senior outfielder Gavin Swanson deposited a solo shot over the centerfield wall. In the same frame, a fielder's choice off the bat of junior infielder Matt Zebroski ? flanked by a sacrifice fly ? equated to a 3-1 advantage for George Washington.
Senior lefty John Meadus (Mt. Holly, NJ/Holy Cross) suffered the loss, working 4.2 innings and facing 20 batters. Conversely, senior southpaw Chris Neary fanned seven through 7.0 innings, en route to advancing to 2-1 on the year.
GW tacked on its second three-spot of the day in the fifth inning, on the strength of five hits. Two runs in the sixth, backed by five in the seventh sealed things.
The Knights were limited to two hits in the nightcap by right-hander Eric Cantrell. The sophomore sat down five, with sophomore designated hitter Steven LaForge (Garfield, NJ/St. Mary) and classmate Brian Dillion, a first baseman, accounting for Fairleigh Dickinson's lone hits. LaForge reached twice and stole a base.
Junior righty Nicholas Melchiorre allowed an unearned run in the first inning then was touched up for three runs in the second frame ? all coming with two outs.
Fairleigh Dickinson wraps-up its four-game set with GW at noon, Sunday, March 8. The teams will once again play a twin bill featuring nine and seven inning games.
