On the final day of competition at the Rebel Spring Games for the Fairleigh Dickinson University softball team, the Knights fell in two close games, defeated by Brown, 2-1, and Manhattan, 4-2.
Brown got on the board first in the first game, with a two-run shot in the first inning. The Knights scored as Ali Keltos (Shelton, CT/Lauralton Hall) walked, and Brianne Benedict (Alliance, OH/West Branch)'s sacrifice attempt turned into a fielding error. With runners at first and third, Benedict stole second and Keltos was able to score to put the Knights on the board, but wasn't enough as Brown took the win.
Kirsten Shreve (Kent, WA/Kentwood) was on the mound for the Knights, allowing only three hits and striking out nine batters.
In the second game of the day, Manhattan struck first, with a double to left center followed by a home run, giving the Jaspers a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Manhattan added two more runs in the third inning for a 4-0 lead. But FDU battled back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the rally wasn't enough as Manhattan went on to win, 4-2.
Meghan Doherty (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) scored after reaching on an error and Shreve, who reached on a single to left center, crossed the plate on an RBI pinch hit single from Brittany Sheppard (Mahwah, NJ/Paramus Catholic).
Trina fields pitched for the Knights, recording 11 strikeouts. She scattered four hits and allowed three earned runs.
“We just need to put all three of the aspects of the game together- pitching, offense and defense,” said Head Coach Dale Martin. “If pitching is going well, we need to hit well and play solid defense. Once we do all three at one time, we will see a lot of positive things.”
