The Fairleigh Dickinson University baseball team topped home-standing Long Island University, 7-5, Sunday, May 4. The Knights, took the series after winning three-straight, and improved to 13-32 overall and 7-12 in the Northeast Conference.
Lefty John Meadus (Mt. Holly, NJ/Holy Cross) earned his team-leading fourth win, tossing a complete game. The junior struck out seven.
LIU (15-30 overall, 6-14 NEC) went up, 1-0, in the second frame, before Fairleigh Dickinson posted a three-spot in the fourth frame. Junior outfielder Jeff Vincent (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) drove in a pair via a single, with junior outfielder Brett Lazar (Commack, NY/Commack) adding an RBI base knock.
A pair of solo homers by sophomore infielder Gerard Tingos and senior catcher Danny Etkin propelled the Blackbirds to a 4-3 advantage.
Junior outfielder Matt Maher (Peekskill, NY/JFK Catholic) poked an RBI ground-rule double to tie things and trigger a three-run seventh. Senior infielder Luis Rosario (Bronx, NY/James Monroe) pushed FDU ahead, 6-4, with a two-RBI base hit.
Freshman southpaw Eric Etkin closed the gap, 6-5, with an RBI two-bagger. Junior infielder Zachary Sand (San Diego, CA/Mission Bay) plated an insurance run in the ninth inning.
Hinkle suffered the loss, hurling 6.2 innings. Etkin paced Long Island's offense with a trio of hits.
Lazar had a three-hit day, with Sand and Maher tallying two hits a piece.
FDU travels to Rutgers University at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 7.
